Egg lure?
« on: October 04, 2004, 04:10:08 PM »
I've got some eggs that i want to make a lure with, any suggestions? I planned to let it rot a little, add some castor, and skunk essence and some sodium benzoate to preserve.  Does this sound like it will work or am I just wasting my time? Thanks, Worm.

Yes, it will work as a reasonable attractor for canines, cats and coon.  problem is, you are also formulating a skunk lure supreme.  Egg based lures have an incredible attraction to skunks who i'll swear can smell the egg lures for a half mile and fill every set one puts out.  Rotten eggs mixed with asafoedita powder and something sweet like honey or anise oil and sometimes a hit of skunk musk,  was a popular old stand-by for fox trappers of the 1920's and 1930's when fox and skunk were bothg money animals to trap.  I've experimented with egg based lures and SFE based lures and the increased skunk harvest was too much for me to handle.  Ace

Asa, thank you sir I apperciate your input. Honestly though catching some skunks doesn't bother me near as much as it does my wife. She made me sell my old chevy malibu because we couldn't get the skunk smell out. She actually made it worse by spraying lilac air freshner in the car. Now that was offensive odor! I've been trapping down here in southern Ohio for almost 3 years now and still have not caught any skunks.  I like to make my own lures and like to add skunk essence to my late season canine lures. Making lures lets me keep the trapping bug alive through the slow summer months. I do ADC work during the off season and still have not had a call to remove any skunks. How far should I let the eggs go before stopping the process with sodium benzoate? Do you think I should add some glycerin to freeze-proof it or is that not nessacary? Thanks again, Worm.

What I would do is boil the eggs first and then let them taint until they are good and stinky and then add the ingredients and sodium benzoate and work them in thouroughly into a paste.  Some glycerine added will help make a pasty, sticky lure and keep the lure from drying out or freezing.  Obviously skunks are not a nuisance in your locality like they are in many so this should make you an effective lure. Good luck!  Ace

VT Trapper:  I was testing an SFE based lure on fox and made six sets along a farm field.  The first two trap checks I had 6 skunks each morning and on the third morning 4 skunks and 2 fox.  Had to clean out 14 skunks in 3 days before there was any vacant sets for fox to work.  That was enough egg based lures for me, I swear those skunks came for a mile to get at that egg based lure.  Ace
