Is converting an 8x57 Mauser a job for a hand reamer or will a lathe be required?

Thanks,

I've not done this particular conversion although it is a popular one.  A hand reamer would most likely be OK but I would have to be certain the 30-06 case reamer (with an 8mm pilot) will clean up the old 8x57 chamber at the shoulder of the 8x57's case.  If not the barrel would have to be set back a thread and that IS a job for a lathe.

Unless you want to pull the barrel it would be easier to cut the chamber by hand.    This used to be a popular wildcat and the 8mm/06 performs very well.    Reamers can be rented from White Rock Tool in Mo, for around $40 so you do not have to buy one.    Last I knew they had 8mm/06 on the list.    I have done a few of these and the chamber is no problem nor is finding loading info, have at it and have fun.

If one can convert an 8x57 to 8-06 then can you do the same to a 7x57?  Except of course to 7mm-06, (280 Rem?)

Sure I suppose that would work..  I don't think I would do either as the original calibers are close enough to what you end up with that the cost is outweighed by any gain..

Rechamber 7x57

Handirifle,

It's simple enough to rechamber an existing 7x57 to the 7mm Express (.280 Remington).  I've done a couple.  The only possible hangup (no pun intended) is that foreign made barrels are frequently tighter bore than US standard.  You might need a removable pilot type chamber reamer for the job.

Thanks, I was wondering as every now and then that caliber shows up on an old Mil surplus rifle cheap and was wondering about ammo availability.

Just another crazy idea in my head.

I would not rechamber any military action in 7MM other than a 98.
