good morning to all. i have a stainless contender with a 10" 30-30 barrel
i also have a 14" 17hmr barrel. they both work fine on my frame. the problem is a 30 cal M1 barrel that a friend lent me. i put it on and closed it up and for the life of me i can't get it open. i have taken the gun as far apart as i feel comfortable with no luck. please help. thanks, kevin

Tap out the hinge pin with a wooden dowel or a brass drift punch. It may be tight but will drift out with a little "persuasion". Not the preferred method but much easier than taking the gun apart.

The reason this happened is because your firend's barrel has the old-style one-piece barrel bolt.  Replace the old bolt with a split, two-piece bolt - use a new spring while you are at it - and it should work fine.

well a trip to the gunshop and 22 bucks later the barrel is off the frame. lonestar was correct, there are design changes between early barrels and newer frames. being new to contenders i didn't do my homework. not a good idea in any firearm endeavor. on the bright side my search for my barrel problem has landed me here at the greybeards forums, and the knowledge
to be gleaned from all you fine folks! thanks for your help. kevin :P

Next time you need help, ask us here.  Then put $22 in a jar.  After about the first month, you will have enough money to go buy another barrel.   :-D

That's an incredible idea. Why didn't you guys mention that before.

I didn't realize that you all buy your barrels that way. I've just decided that every time one of you utter something that I find useful, I'm going to put $20 in a jar.

I've only been on for an hour tonight, and I already have $1840.00 in the jar. How many barrels is that?

 :)
