Maxi-hunter's OK in a Hawken?
« on: October 06, 2004, 01:00:03 PM »
Fellas, are TC's MAXI-HUNTER's ok in a .50 Hawken with Pyrodex?

Stupid question probably, but just want to be sure.  The rifle is a 1/48, so I'm not going to use sabots...

Thanks in advance!!

Absolutely...TC made them for the TC Hawken & Renegade 1:48" barrels

Stoots, the only stupid question is the one not asked. As roundball said, that's what they were made for. In the past I have had good luck with them in .58 cal in a 1/48 twist Enfield replica, but I'm way to cheap to buy them anymore and have not found a mold to make my own.

Jason,
Most people are gonna say it's o k to shoot them.  But the only way to find out for sure is to stuff one down the bore in fronta some powder and let er fly.

Please remember to reduce yer powder from it's round ball load afor ya touch off that heavier chunk a lead.

I have TC Renegade in 50 cal, 1/48" twist, that shoots both the 250 and 320 grain Lee REAL conicals very, very well.   Don't know about Pyrodex though.  I use Swiss or Goex FFg.  I would imagine a suitable load of Pyrodex could be workd up.

Agreed with all. Especially with that 1 in 48 twist.
I took one deer (my first) with the older Maxi-ball. Highly accurate and like a freight train.
When the Maxi-hunter came out it was suppose to be the answer to the non-expanding Maxi-ball. I was mildly interested but by then it was too late! those patched round balls were knocking the socks off them deer at 100yds and under.

Now about those bear and elk..........

Stoots  My .50 Renegade shoots 385 gr Buffalo bullet into 2" groups @ 75 yds with a TC tang peep all day if I can get someone else to absorb the back blast.  I have used 90 gr of RS pyro in the past but wise counsel has moved me to 80 gr of ff Swiss.  It gives About 1400 fps which will perforate any midwest whitetail end to end if neccessary.  I practice with the 250 gr Lee REAL I cast myself.
