Recently attempted to mount a Redfield 4x scope onto the grooved receiver on my Remington Nylon 66, but the bases would not fit securely into the grooves. (I took the scope off a Remington 582 .22 where it fit perfectly.) Any ideas on why this problem exists? I returned the scope to the 582 & would like to purchase one that fits correctly for the Nylon 66.

First, Welcome to GBO!
You don't say what rings you are using, but it may not make a difference.
The Remington Nylon 66 has a stamped steel receiver cover. The grooves are not as crisp as you find on machined steel receiver. Many owners of the Nylon series report the scope mount will not stay secure because of the receiver cover. I briefly tried a scope on an Apache Black. Took it off and now enjoy the rifle as a plinker. It's a fun shooter, but as they say "you can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear".

Both of these rifles use a 3/8 dovetail for the rings to clamp to. This 'tip-off' mount arrangement is the norm for the industry. Perhaps a trip to a local gunshop might turn up a set of rings that will clamp to the 66. The problem with the scope mounts on a nylon 66 was that the receiver cover could shift and allow the zero to wonder. It was really a small problem.. These are very reliable rifles and are very handy. They are the easiest autolaoding 22 to single load I've ever seen. Turn the rifle on it's side with the ejection port upright. Lay a loaded round in the side of the bolt with the bullet toward the muzzle. Pull and release the actuator handle. The round will be loaded...

I have two of these rifles, a mohawk brown that my dad bought for me as a kid in the sixties, and an apache black I bought for my kid in the late eighties. I bought it for him because I new what mine had been through, and yes, they are not exactly a tack driver, but are as dependable as they come.

The mohawk brown has sported a 1.5 X 5 bushnell for at least 30 years or more.

If you remove the receiver cover to clean the rifle, the point of impact will change.

I wouldn't trade mine for anything, guess it's the sentimental value.

Thank you for the informative replies. This confirms what I thought about the receiver grooves being stamped instead of machined. I may remove the receiver cover and check out a few shops to see if anyone has tip-off scope rings that can be securely mounted. I agree on the "fun" factor of the 66 when used as a plinker. Years ago, (before they became "private landfills"), I would spend hours shooting rats at our local dump. At that time semi-auto .22"s were not permitted for hunting game animals in Pennsylvania. Since moving to Ohio, I thought it would make a good squirrel rifle. If nothing else, I guess this justifies the purchase of a Ruger 10/22.

You brought back some memories of my childhood, back when things were much slower. Dad went to town every saturday morning to get his hair cut and would drop me and a friend off at the city dump with our .22's and a box of shorts........everything closed saturday noon in those days......spent almost every saturday morning at the dump shooting rats and loads of other junk. Man, I sure long for that slower less stressful time.......Thanks for bringing back the memories.......
