The .338 Lapuia was developed as a sniper round by one of the scandanavian countries, I believe Sweden.  The only rifle I have seen chambered for that round is the AR-30 made by Armalite.  The guns are scarce now due to most of the ones being built are going to the big sandbox.  I know one guy that has one, with the howitzer type brake.  He let me shoot it at the range and it is so light on recoil I could hardly believe it was shooting proper loads.  Then I shot for a group at 500 yards and saw it really shoots good.  Off a rest I shot a four iinch, five shot group at 500 yards.  That was the first time I ever shot the gun.

Remington has a special M700 available to shoot the round. They had to make some mods because it requires a bigger bolt face. I have no doubt they are after the Military market.

The Lapua will outrun the 338 RUM.  338/300 RUM and the Lapua are real close.  The Lapua has better brass available which should allow you to push it harder.  Sako chambers it in the TRG also and a lot of custom rifle builders are chambering it and it's offspring.

With 225's The RUM does 3178 FPS.  I don't think the Lapau can go any FPS faster. And the rum pushes the 200 gr bullet at 3260 FPS. How fast does the Lapau shoot these bullets?

My understanding is that the Lapua or the 338/300RUM will push a 300SMK to ~2850 while the 338RUM will do ~2750.  Depending on the rifle, chamber, barrel, etc., there may be no difference between the two or there may be a couple hundred FPS.

Actually The RUM shoots the 300 RN at 2728 FPS. I don't have  or I should say I haven't found any load info. on the Lupua.

The RUM and the Lupua Are pretty much so the same in bullet velocity. In other words the RUM can shoot say the 225 faster then the Lupua. But the Lupua can shoot the 300 gr bullet faster then the RUM.

With my 250gr Nosler bullet goes 2975 FPS with the powder I'm using.

With Serria 250gr bullet they  go 3015 fps

The 338 Lapua Mag was designed by Sako (rifle), and Lapua (bullet development), and both companies are Finnish.  The concept was originally brought out by the Navy Seals using the 416 Rigby case.  The case couldn't handle the pressures that this round produced and so the Seals dropped the project and Sako/Lapua picked up the concept and developed it.  Sako produces the TRG-42 and did produce the TRG-S hunting rifle, Accuracy International does, Armalite does, PDW does, and several other companies I have heard besides Gunsmiths.

Here is some data from Lapua:

250 gr SP or 250 gr Scenar match HPBT:

Velocity, 0 Mtr 900 M/S, 600 Mtr 633 M/S, 1000 Mtr 481 M/S

Energy, 0 Mtr 6561 J, 600 Mtr 3245 J, 1000 Mtr 1874 J

(the data is in metric)

The 338 Lapua excells with the 300 gr match HPBT bullet as compared to the other calibers mentioned, I am not well versed.  I have shot the 300 Rum in a M700 rifle and wasn't impressed with the setup and accuracy.  The Rum was a loaner rifle for me to develop a load for a friend, he finally got tired of finding a good load for that rifle and sold it.

I bet that 700 wasn't a Sendero. Try a SF or SF II in .300RUM and you'll have a new found respect for the caliber altogether.

I am tempted to get an AR30 in the Lapua offering but even reloading was pricey(last I checked anyways). Remington is bringing out .338L ammo this year, it'll be interesting to see their price versus other makers.

One of the local gun shops had an AR-30 in .338 Lapua.  I looked at it and wanted to think about it.  Decided I wanted it and went into the store, they had sold it the day before.  I looked at Cartridges of the World and compared the .338 RUM, .338 Lapua, and the .338-378 Weatherby.

Using a 250gr bullet the RUM gets 2860 fps, the Lapua get 2855 fps, the Weatherby gets 3009 fps.

Being unable to locate an AR-30, Armalite was back ordered for the military and sending everything to the big sandbox.

I shot my neighbors RUM several times and did not like it's performance.

I bought the .338-378 Weatherby.  Current score two Wolves at 700 yards, one Moose at 800 yards.  Moose took three steps and collapsed.  I'm using a .225gr Nosler Accubond at 3210 fps per my Chrony.

The military had it produced to be a replacement for the 50 BMG as a single carry sniper rifle.  I has incredible accuracy, range and with the proper bullets can penetrate a tremendous amount of steel.  It is meant to be the true LONG range sniper round, and it carries far more energy with the 250gr loadings than the 7.62 NATO, especially past 500yds.

It also leaves a much smaller dust signature on the ground after firing, than does the BMG, giving the sniper a better chance to make more shots while remaining undetected.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!
