22 Sporster Break In
« on: September 26, 2004, 12:03:12 AM »
I've put a little more than a brickof ammo thru my sporster and the accuracy isn't where I'd like it to be. 2 inch or more groups at 25 yards. Type of ammo doesn;'t seem to matter. I've shot every bulk ammon through it. I may even try Green Tag.

Because it's in a 17 synthetic stock, the barrel seems to be "floated" already.

Any advice? Otherwise I'll just keep shootin' and hope for the best.

What type of scope do you have?  A rimfire scope has a parallax set at 50 yards, a rifle scope usually 100 yards.  If you look at your 25 yard target through the scope and move your eye around can you see the cross airs move on the target?  A rifle scope will be the worst for this, a rimfire scope not as bad because the parallax is set shorter.  I quite using a 3-9x40 rifle scope and started using a 6-18x50 scope with adjustible objective to set the parallax to the distance I'm shooting.  Makes target shooting much better.

The parallax shift on the 3-9x40 rifle scope on close shots cost me a couple squirrels....  Can't have that!!!

Edit, you might also want to have the crown inspected.  If the crown and parallax aren't the problem have a gunsmith check for a tight spot in the barrel that could be resizing the bullet smaller than the bore/rifling.  If that's the case the rifle will need to be sent back to nef for a replacement barrel.  Sorry.

Scruffster/P-man, Your point is a good one. I understand parallax and I have a 4x32 bushnell on it that is set up for 50--sharp focus and the crosshairs do not *seem* to move, but its an old scope and still could be the problem.

I'll mount a proven AO scope on it and see if that tightens it up.

I put another 1/2 brick through it this weekend on silhouettes and tin cans. I really enjoyed shooting it and it makes a brick last a long, long time.

Try all the ammo you can get...my sportster (.22 LR) likes Stingers best!

Tried six different ammos that I had on hand. (No stingers). Even green tag didn't do well.

Everything was bad--then I fed it some Dynapoints--BINGO! Dime size groups at 50.

i ran the other ammo through one more time with the same result. I've never had a rifle so choosey about what you feed it.

Isn't that the truth!. Never can tell just what they want...
You and I have the same model rifle...but they don't like the same ammo.
There is an important issue for all rimfire shooters..

I've heard of some shooters sorting rimfire ammo by rim thickness. I realize that most that do this are hardcore target shooters but is there that big of an advantage?

Also, how much variance are we talking that will make a difference? Do you sort a whole brick at a time or each box of fifty? Inquiring minds want to know.

I've got a friend --an anal silhouette shooter -- who sorted by rim size for years. He says it makes a difference, but he finally gave up, figuring it was easier to just buy good target ammo. He had a cool sliding gizmo to check the rims that i want to borrow just to try it out to see for myself...

I'd rather be shooting than measuring. I found my rifle likes subsonics best my wifes prrefers CCI minimags.

oquirrh -

my rimfire sportster arrived last week. i shot 2 boxes throught it and hit every can i aimed at, and even a few i didn't aim at ! it's a fun gun !

how are you shooting to get 2" patterns ?, offhand ? a few of the guys here said that accuracy tightens up after a few hundred rounds and few good cleanings. i've yet to make any group (pattern) measurements yet.

i just like my sportster, it's fun, i want to send it back to the factory for irons sights just to have a backup excuse as to why i missed whatever i was shooting at. "well, you know, iron sights at 412.7 yards is tough !"

for my other 22 rimfires, one marlin tube-feeder, an old stevens, and a few ruger 10-22's, i use winchester wildcat ammo that usually sells for $10 brick when on sale. it seems to shoot pretty good. i even keep a brick or two of federal match ammo around in case i need the extra confidence !
