BUTCHS BORE SHINE

DOES ANY ONE KNOW IF BUTCHS IS A PETROLEUM PRODUCT? I CANT TELL BY THE SMELL AND THE LABEL DOESNT SAY. WANT TO USE BORE BUTTER BUT I HAVE A WHOLE BOTTLE OF BORE SHINE.

All I've ever been able to find out about this stuff is that it is a "chemical
based" bore cleaner. Don't  know what that means, but petroleum is not mentioned anywhere in discussions about it. It removes copper and lead as well as plastic from the bore with ease and everyone I know that uses it swears by it. I cleaned one of my flintlocks with it once and had  no problems, but that hardly constitutes a valid test process. Anyway, I doubt you'll do any harm if you use this product and it might be of real benefit if you use sabots in your gun. A final rinse with very hot water should clean out any residue left behind.

Are you asking about Butch's Bore Shine or Butch's Blackpowder Bore Shine.  I've never used the Bore Shine but I got a bottle of the Blackpowder Bore Shine with my GPR.  I've used it and it works great.  It has no odor at all and, according to the info on Lyman's web site, it is non-toxic, non-flammable and biodegradable, so I doubt it contains any petroleum products.

I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE SPECIFIC, ITS BUYCHS BLACKPOWDER. IT CAME WITH A GPR KIT. CLEANS WELL ENOUGH JUST DONT KNOW HOW IT WILL WORK WITH BORE BUTTER.

I've used the BP Bore Shine and then finished up with bore butter for protection. I also use patches lubed with BB but recently switched to mutton tallow/beeswax for lube. Still use the Bore Butter for after cleaning. Never had a problem. I use the bore shine after hot water cleaning and it removes a lot of residue the water scrub left behind.

I had the same question, so I called Lyman's Customer Service last winter.  

BBS-BlackPowder is a petroleum-based product.  It's also the best cleaner that I've found for BP.

I use Goex FFg and either Bore Butter or Mink Oil/Tallow from Track of the Wolf (the mink oil liquifies in a hot Arizona summer), lubing my own patches (50 cal., .490 and .495 ball) Both seem to work really well with BBS-BP.  It doesn't seem to destroy the seasoning of the barrel, and my cleaning effort and number of patches is minimized. :grin:

I can also tell you what didn't work - Birchwood Casey Black Powder Solvent.  I have a bottle if anyone is interested.  About as effective as spitting on a fire to remove the fouling.

I use the the BBS blackpowder cleaner on all my black powder riles. It has a orderless water type consistency, which I like because it cleans residue without a oily mess. Works great in my custom flint for swabbing between shots. I also wet down a patch and use it to wipe down the complete lock/pan area while at the range. Good stuff. Actually I am hooked on most of the Butches products. I like the oil because it has a very light oder. I use the bore shine in my high power rifles for removing copper residue. It has a slight oil consistency with a touch of ammonia. Must add I have no interest in the company just think they are all great products.
