have anyone used the Barnes 250 gr. sabots?

I just got 5 of them from a Friend to use for the up coming early muzzloading hunt. I was using 240 hornady XTP mag and have not been happy with the results. the deep H.P. ON the Barnes looks like they will really do a number on a deer and under 50 yards.

I will be shooting them out of my 14 inch 209x50 contender barrel with 90 grs of pyrodex p. this is the same load I used with the 240 gr xtp mag bullets. I do know how they shoot out of my barrel.

They are very good bullets. I used one a couple years back to take a decent buck.

The one complaint I hear often is people claiming that they do not expand. I never recovered the bullet I used that day, however I have seen first hand evidence of their expansion. My bother in law took a doe at an undetermined distance (although I was told it was mighty far) with a 250 barnes and 150 gr of Pyro pellets. The recovered bullet was mushroomed beautifully and was pretty close to the picture on the package. Of course 1 bullet is not a good indicator. In the book Modern Muzzleloading for Today's Whitetails by Ian McMuchey, he shows pictures of recovered bullets including a good selection of Barnes bullets. Many of these are expanded although some have very little to show they were even shot!

My personal issue with Barnes Bullets is cost. At a buck a pop they can quickly deplete your hunting budget. The only  reason I was able to use them was due to picking them up on the clearance rack for less than half price that spring.

I do most of my hunting shopping  after the season ends. this past spring I was able to get 2 cases of odor stop srpay for the price of 1 bottle during the hunting season.  got me a nice backpack with a 2 L. hydration blatter for $7.00 I have yet to see many muzzleloading bullets after the season.

I guess it depends on where you live. I've got 4 Walmarts within an hour drive and 1 inside an hour and a half. 3 of them always have muzzleloading stuff left over. The year I used the Barnes I got $80+ worth of Barnes bullets for $4 per package (8 packages). This spring I bought 5 pounds of Triple Seven from $19 (when they first started clearancing them) to $12 (when they were almost out). Everytime they dropped the price I grabbed a pound figuring I might as well buy it cheap. I've still got 2 unopened pounds left and just finished off the last opened one. What's even better was they were all the same lot number. I carried a piece of paper in my wallet with the lot number on it and checked for it when I bought the clearance powder.

I just always hit the clearance rack to see if they have any goodies. I almost always find stuff I need cheap.

I have heard a lot of good reports with the Barnes 250 gr. bullets for the M/L. I use the 195 gr. Barnes in my .45 cal M/L and they work great. They expand like advertised. I am think of trying the Barnes 250 gr. bullets in one of my .50 cal M/L's. :D
