26" or 32" barrel help!
« on: January 22, 2003, 02:03:09 PM »
I am going to have 50cal. barrel built for my T/C firestorm in 1/28" twist and was wondering if any of you had any advice on barrel length. I am not concerned about the weight increase. Do you know what the velocity increase from a 26" to 32" would be? I will be shooting 130 to 150grs of ffg BP or pellets which is what I use know in my 26" bbl 1x48" twist. The problem is I can not stabilize my 350gr and 410gr .430 WLN or LFN bullets with harvester sabots. With the 350gr I have reached the upper limits of the 1X48" twist with  1 or 2 out of 5 shots being a key hole at 50yds. The 310gr bullets work fine.

          Thanks for your help

Harpy- You're going to need the 32" if you're looking to burn lots of powder, it's extremely doubtful you'll be able to consume more than 100 gr. efficiently, the 3 Pyrodex pellets thing is ridiculous, the only weapon thats going to derive any benefit from 150 gr. is likely going to be crew served. If you have access to a chorograph shoot over it from a lighter charge say 70 gr. shoot 3 to 5 shot groups increase the charge in 5 gr. increments. when you see the velocity increasing at a decreasing rate you've hit the point of diminishing returns and there's no point in going much beyond that, as beyond that point your recoil, fouling and barrel erosion is going to be increasing at an increasing rate and the velocity will
increase very little. The best load is the most accurate load at the best velocity. accuracy is what you really need. I'd shoot loose powder not pellets, the only real benefit derived from the pellets is to Hodgdon and the retailer where you bought them, it's just a brilliant marketing ploy for
the rifle manufacturer as they say it's a 150 gr. rifle, the truth is as long as
the bullet is seated firmly against the charge you could shoot 300 gr. loads and the barrel isn't going to blow up or even bulge, and the Hodgdon is going to make a bundle selling the ridiculously expensive little turds, and no rifle is ever going to be at it best as far as accuracy potential
in 50 or 30 gr increments.

fredj,
   Thanks for your info.
The load that I am using out of my T/C Firestorm Flintlock for my long range shooting is (2) 50gr + (1) 30gr pellet and 5grs of 2ff---135grs total with one of my custom 255gr gr .430 spitzer (.265 BC) in a harvester sabot.  I did start with 80grs of 2ff and have tried all combinations working up just as you described and the load listed above is the most accurate. After lapping the bore, it will shoot 2 1/2"@100yds. At 4.75" high @ 50yds I am down about 12.5"@300yds. Not a good load for 100yds or 200yds because the P.O.I is so high. I would like to use a heavier bullet to hit with more authority. The 310gr out of harvester sabots are working well with 90grs of 2ff or 130grs of 2ff. The P.O.I raised on both bullets as I increased the powder charge. I did not shoot the 310gr (.315 BC) over my CHRONOGRAPH yet but the 255gr bullets fly @ 2070fps, average for 5 shots.
Anyway, I like to shoot the heavier bullets at longer range and I am sure that the faster twist will help. My goal is to be able to shoot the heavy weights at long range.  DON’T laugh, it’s just for the challenge, fun, and enjoyment.
Fredj I am not  too familiar  BP shooting. I just started shooting last year and I LOVE it. It is a bad habbit I have, to try to get the most out of everything I shoot, by way of accuracy and wide range of performance. With my T/C Firestorm Flintlock I have worked up small game round ball loads to 370gr Maxi ball loads and 310gr WLN hard or soft cast bullets to shoot the just about the same P.O.I @ 50yds I can use all three loads w/o changing my sights. I am sure is all I would ever need to take all the game in North America, large and small.
But those dam plate’s at 300yds!!!

Harpy- I agree the heavier slugs are the way to fly for longer range,  most of my slug shooting has been with a Parker Hale Whitworth
.45  1 in 20" hex bore, I've used it for 500 meter Silhouette and it'll wax the ram every time as long as I do my part, my load for that is the Lyman
Whitworth 475 gr. a card wad and 70 gr. Elephant FFg, For 1000 yd I use 85 gr. Elephant FFg and the Lyman 535 gr. Postell.  If you enjoy working out loads and rifle cranking these rifles are a great deal of fun.
