In all honesty, there is another company coming out with the HMR loaded with a 17gr. V-Max bullet. I'm sure with this additional brand, it would be safe to say the 17 HMR is here to stay. Not only that, but soon I believe the prices of ammo will start to come down because of this.

Actually I think CCI is the ONLY company in the US making this ammo. Just a lot of folks who want to sell it under their own brand name.

Graybeards right. Same manufacture(Hornady), different name on product. I believe that Hornady is loading this for Federal, Remington and now Winchester. Lawdog

Correction, Hornady only supplies bullets and specs, CCI is doing the loading in their plant.

Thanks guys for the information on who does what. But still, wouldn't the price of ammo come down, some way or another? I'm thinking competition between the different "brand names" applied for instance, you know? Or am I missing the target on this? I'm not really sure how this kind of stuff works. :?

I just had a thought; if CCI is manufacturing all ammo for the 17 HMR, manufacturing tolerances would be equivalent regardless of the brand name on the box. What I don't understand then, is how come certain "brands" would shoot better than others in any given firearm? I find it odd that even though all 17 HMR rounds are Mfg'd in the same plant, under the same tolerances, using the same brand bullets (eg. Hornady V-Max) that different "brands" would not shoot the same, so to speak.

Many have speculated that different brand mfrs have CCI build the ammo to their specs, but on the other hand, same brands have shot different just due to lot number differences....so it's hard to tell. After the barrel is broke in well, and you find ammo that shoots better than others, I'd recommend you buy more of that lot number, works for me in all my hmrs. I've got the lot numbers and brands for each of the 4 hmrs I own written down so I can remember which shoots best in each!

LOT numbers don't last for ever! I understand that theory but what do you do when that perfect lot number is gone?

Try a different lot number or even a different brand.....My CZ452 American used to like CCI HP, now it likes the Federal Vmax better, just depends.....I just wouldn't recommend buying a brick or 2 of ammo that you don't know shoots well....buying locally works best too because you can usually go back for more of the same lot if your range trip was a good one. Buying online can be a little tricky because you don't have a clue whether it will shoot good. I have an advantage having 4 hmrs, if it doesn't shoot good in one in may well shoot good in another! One of the shooters at RFC bought 2000 rounds from Midway or Midsouth when the ammo was on sale, that brand shot real good until he received the new lot, it didn't shoot well at all, to say the least he was very unhappy.

My Savage shoots all the different brands pretty well, with a slight advantage to Hornady. Both my T/C contender barrels (Super 14 and rifle) shoot all the 17 grain bullets the same with tighter groups than the Savage. I haven't tried my Contender rifle 17M2 barrel yet. I hope it is a boring as the other T/C barrels. The biggest change for the Savage is it doesn't like the hollowpoints or the 20 grain bullets. They don't feed well, and groups open up to about an inch at 100 yards.
