.44 Mag carbine- not ejecting?
« on: October 06, 2004, 04:34:52 AM »
We have a .44 Mag carbine that is jamming consistently and not ejecting the spent shells.  When the gunsmith was looking at it, it jammed so bad he couldn't even disassemble it for a few days.
The gunsmith is at a loss.  Ruger has refused to look at it or even provide parts, saying "we no longer provide parts to solve this particular problem".  This tells me there is a known design defect and they refuse to stand by their product.  All they did was offer PARTIAL credit toward a new firearm (only Ruger of course).  Don't know why I'd want another gun that doesn't come with company support behind it.
Anyone have experience with this problem or an idea what to do with it?  It's not a leading problem, the action is clean and everything.
Comments appreciated!

Your Ruger 44 carbine has been out of production for so many years that parts are not available. As you can see, this can be quite a problem. You can't really blame Ruger for not making parts for an obsolete rifle.

I had a Ruger 44 carbine also but decided to trade it in on a new Ruger 44 Deerfield when I found out that it could no longer be serviced at the factory.

The new rifle shoots great, feeds and ejects reliably and will be servicable at the factory for many years to come.

I might add that the trade-in deal offered by Ruger may be just as good (or better) at your local gun dealer.

Just my 2 cents - VH

Gary Reeder, gunsmith, or one of the guys over at leverguns.com who is a few years older than me might know what the problem is and how to repair one of your existing parts.

A mig welder might be all that's needed, with a little dremel grinder, a bit of anealling, and some patient thought put into it, to restore that rifle.

Good luck.

Thanks, I'll follow up on that lead.
It's not so much that I blame Ruger for not keeping every possible part in production forever...though I've never had problems finding parts for an out-of-production gun before.  It's that they seemed to know exactly what the problem was but refused to discuss it or tell ME what it was so I could take care of it...they just wanted to "wash their hands of it" it seemed. :(

Although I have had excellent results from Ruger's service people when asking questions or looking for Spare parts, I admit that your impression of them could be right on.     I'm surprised they'd be so short-sighted in this day when there's so much competition in their business.

Hope you find / learn about whatever you need to affect a repair.

Good luck,

SS'

I am not exactly sure what you mean by jamming.  I can tell you this, if someone in the past has used lead bullets, it may only need a cleaning.  The gas port will plug with lead causing insufficient gas to operate the action.
