PP tests - good results with teflon tape for lube!
« on: September 29, 2004, 03:03:43 PM »
I am pleased with the results of my test.  I need to load these at the bench next time out and not at the range by hand with the lee loader and a hammer.  I could not control my seating depth.  Bullet Lee 405gr. HB cast with WW.  Paper patched with tracing paper (padded) dipped in water with a few drops of white elmers glue for adhiesion.  Dried and then wrapped with two wraps of 3/4 in. wide teflon tape.  loaded into my 1867 Danish rolling block over 65gr. of Goex. FFg by volume.  no wad.  no compression of powder, tamped down with a spent 223 cart.  Ironed the teflon tape on by rolling wapped bullet between two pieces of hardwood.  Without a press I could not control the seating depth with a hammer tapping the bullet down in by hand.  shot from elbows, no bags. 3 rounds in 1 3/4 in. at 110yds, 2 rounds dropped but all 5 in inside a 5in by 2in. box.   This has potential!!  JB

JBMauser-

How thick was the 3/4 wide Teflon tape?  (source?)  I've seen a lot of 1/2" wide.

Hope you're side stepping all the water at SML.

the teflon tape came out .002  I got it at one of those communist chineese tool stores.  I think it was Harbour Freight.  I had not seen it before as well. JB

Sounds like defferences either in technique or throat or both.  Perhaps differences in tape.

I wrapped the telflon over the bottom so it would not catch an edge so to speak and pull up.  I flared the case mouth with the Lee flaring die.  The tape was put on tight and ironed down rolling between two blocks of hardwood.  I did not pull any bullets but no teflon pushed up the neck on seating and groups show promise.  OAL is my next challenge.  I did not polish the insides of the necks nor lube them but did tumble these straight walled cases.  JB

I just remembered someting important about the condition of the bullet.  The article from Handloader said to use frosted bullet which will bite and hold the teflon.  My bullets are very frosted and do hold the teflon or offer the teflon someting with tooth.  I guess if you had nice shinny bullet you could roll it on emery paper to give it some tooth.  JB

If you want to put a bite on any smooth bullet, use a file and roll the bullet on a hard surface with it. It put teeth on the surface and holds just fine.

A few years ago I did a lot of intensive testing with teflon tape replacing paper. I had some good but mostly bad results.
I used cast tapered, straight walled cast and swaged, pure lead to 1-20 lead tin alloy. I wrapped the teflon on the bullet, wrapped then ran them through the swaging die and swaged the teflon to the bullet till the teflon was transparent. swaging the teflon to the bullet this is were I had the best results, but just not as good as using the regular paper jackets.
Were they failed bad was past 200 yards. At 250-300 yards the majority just would not even make it on a 3' cardboard.
The teflon stays with the bullet, and  makes it very unstable.
I have used a teflon spray on my PP for a lube to reduce the abbraison of the dry paper and even found a little increase of the velocity.
