Just wondering how many of you have .45-70 that are able to shoot Barnes X bullets? What about round nose bullets? What kind of results do you or have you gotten with them? Lawdog

LAWDOG, I haven't used Barnes X bullets, but, I do like the 300 gr Originals in my 45-70 and 45-90 Winchesters. Also I have had excellent results with Hornady's 350 RN. It is an extremely tough bullet and will go lengthwise through a big 'ol boar hog. I plan to use them on elk sometime soon. Properly placed it should be a one shot effort.

I haven't tried the Barnes Xs either but I do use the Barnes 400 gr Original semi spitzers. I drive them at 2300 fps from my Siamese Mauser. They will turn an elk every which way but loose, feral hogs too!
Would expect the RN Originals to do as well. I believe they come in two jacket thickness for use depending on velocity.

Hi Lawdog,
I refrained replying at first, becuase my experience may not pertain today. I have a #1 that I loaded up 300X's right after they became available. I had them loaded about 2400fps. Accuracy wasn't that great, about 1 1/2" at 50yds., but acceptable for my purpose intended. Anyhow, the blackie I shot with at 40 yds, level and broadside. Did a nosedive on the second leap. The X took out a rib going in, left a tennis ball size hole on exiting. I know Randy did some changes on the X's since. And I haven't tried a "new" run of the 300's.
I also some 350's loaded up to 2300fps. They shoot alittle better. Been waiting to try them on Elk, just haven't had time the last few years to make senario happen. But next year, I'm taking my oldest to Colorado, for his first Elk hunt. The #1 45-70 will be with me, as well as the 9.3x74R, that I just ordered built.
