If you had to make a choice?

I'm thinking of getting an Encore carbine in either .270 or .30-06. does anyone have experience with either if these or have a prefrence?

Ive been in the middle of many a classic debate......the old 9mm vs .45 and the big bore vs medium.  The 06 vs 270 is another oldie.  So I did my own hard study on the two.  Here is what I came out with......the 06 is the more powerful of the two, yes.  BUT its such a small, miniscule, teeny tiny edge as not even to be worth noting.  The 06 may have a bit of an edge in the versatility dept. because it can use heavier bullets.  But if your going after bigger game the simple solution would be to get a new BBl in a bigger caliber, thus again negating any advantage.  So the simple answer?  Flip a coin.  Heads 06, tails 270.  Tell us which it lands on  :) .

P.S. I personaly chose the 06, but only because it was the bigger bore of the two.

I would have to go with the 06 on this one.  With the same bullet weights anything that the 270 will do the the 30/06 will do better and you have the availability of heavy bullets for big game.  Another thing worth looking into is the versatility of factory ammo  125-220gr loadings found amost anywhere and high energy loadings that will give most 300 win loads a run for thier money.   If you won't do any really big game hunting with it the 270 is a great whitetail round and also found anywhere.  Since I live in alaska I opted for the 30/06.  It makes for a dandy do all barrel.

There is an extremely wide range of .308 bullets to play with, so I'd probably get the .30-06. I have been studying the .338-06. Anybody tried that in an Encore?

I just got back from shooting my encore at the range.  I finished sighting in with the 180gr Nolser Partition federal HE loading.  I'm really impressed with this load, a 180gr partition @ 2900fps.  It shoots really well out of my encore.  This was the last group I shot with it today, just under 2" for 3 shots at 200 yards.  I was going to shoot 5 but didn't want to mess up a good thing  :grin: .   I don't think thats too bad for a factory 24" 30/06 barrel.

30-06 or 270

I would lean towards the '06 just because of so many different bullet  types and weights available for the handloader or in factory loads, other than that I don't believe any deer sized animal is going to know the difference at all as long as your shot is on the money, dead is dead. Get whatever gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling. No bad choice here. Good Shooting!

Rusty, I live about 1/2 hour outside of Chas., near the border of Kanawha and Lincoln Counties. We're getting ready for the deer seasons(bow and rifle ect.) to start. This time of year I can't imagine ever being anywhere  else. I understand what you mean about relocating for a job, I've considered it a couple of times but just can't bring myself to make the the move(family ect.).  BIG Bucks in Wyoming County from what I understand, the deer population in general has improved by leaps and bounds since '79. DNR has done a great job here.   Good Shooting!

I know the fellow that is the wildlife biologist there at the R.D. Bailey Damn. he is a traditional bow hunter. That's all they allow in Wyoming county, archery. He says that in what they refer to as the Southern Coalfields Wildlife Management Area they have plenty of bucks that would make a sizable entry in the Boone and Crockett record books. The problem is the mountains are so rugged that anything you shoot away up thar, you have to git out of thar. That can be no small problem.
  Most of our family hunts Greenbriar County up near Green Bank. Plenty of big stuff up there too.

I would have to vote for the .270.  I have always been partial to this round probably because its been good to me.  Living in TX, its most common victims are whitetail but I wouldn't be afraid to step the grain of the bullet and tackle some larger game up north.
