Well, I'd have to say go with the one you want. Either gun will probably out shoot the shooter. I don't mean that in a bad way, just that I have seen more people here in MT hunt with magnums, becasue they want to reach out and touch them, when a standard .30-06 would have been plenty. The farthest shot I've heard of these people taking was about 300 yards. Heck I can do that with my .280 no problem, but beyond that I don't chance it.

The barrels in bigger hot magnums calibers don't wear out as fast so that is what I would go with.  If you get either one spend  a few hundres more dollars and start reloading. They won't cost more that six or seven dollars a box if you buy quantity from Midway. I saw these on the shelf for 30$ a box last fall.

I tend to think that unless you reload, I would go else where than the ultra mags.  I really dont think they will survive as factory offerings in rifles or cartridges.  Just an opinion.

jake - I've got a Rem 700 BDL SS in .300 RUM and it is an awesome long range rifle! I've had mine mag-na-ported and re-stocked with a Mcmillian synthetic stock and a Decelerator recoil pad. You will notice it when you shoot it from the bench but in the field you won't notice the recoil as much. The 7mm RUM should kick a less. As for being around in the future the 7mm and the .300 RUM's will be there but I don't think the RSAUM's will be there the .300WSM has got too much of a lead on them. Just my two cents :D
If I can't take my rifles with me, I don't want to go!

Firstly I say buy which ever you prefer, but the fact that you bring up recoil suggests you should get a more standardized chambering, I personally think you would do good with a 7mm Remington Magnum or perhaps even a 30'06 or 280 as Hogfan stated, I don't think either the Ultra mag or saum  is any better for what you want it for, but if you want something new go for it. I have both calibers (7mm Mag & 300 SAUM) and I think that they are pretty comparable to each other.

I have had the 7mm for about 12 years now and I love it's accuracy, reach, and knock down power.

The 300 SAUM is the newest one for me, and this will be it's first year out actually hunting. I have developed a couple of handloads for it after 3 months worth of working with different powders (165gr. & 180gr. Interbonds) and they both mark VERY well on paper. So this deer hunting season I will put them to the test of how effectively they do the job in REAL time.

The 7mm Mag has proven itself to me many times over,... now I've got to give the 300SAUM a run for its money.
