How to carry new G2
« on: July 21, 2004, 12:43:42 AM »
I am looking for the whole deal on carrying this new G2...Looking more at setting it up with swivels and a strap...Never did like holsters, but I am open for suggestions...

Who makes the cleanest swivel set up for this weapon.?? It is a G2, 14in, with a 2x7 Burris in 204 Ruger... Using it for practise and groundhogs.. and just plain walking and shooting...Thanks,

on the contender grip.....i do like chris said. i replace one of the grip cap screws with a wood screw type swivel stud. drill carefully to correct size to keep from splitting the wood.
on the forearm......i replace the front forearm mounting screw with a machine thread type stud. it will need to be cut to proper length, to hold forearm on also.
i use a 1", and or 1 1/4" nylon sling to pack the gun with. it is called a "super sling", and is actually made for rifles. it is made by outdoor connection. picked mine up at wal-mart. this sling shortens up really short, and adjusts easily.
i also use the sling as a shooting aid, as it droops behind my left elbow. works good with 14" barrels. 8)

I use the 'safari  sling' on all my long guns including turkey shotgun.  I was trying to figure a way to use it with my G2 handgun as well, but don't see the way yet.   I am not eager to put a swivel stud on the bottom of my G2 grip as  it seems it would interfere with my rest when bench shooting.  If I put the butt gripcap on a sandbag however, I guess it wouldn't cause a problem.  I was thinking about putting the grip swivel stud on the front of the grip close the bottom as possible to be able to use the safari sling, but I think it would interfere with my hand there....

yep, it will slightly interfere with bench shooting. i get by with resting the forearm on 2 sandbags(blue jean legs filled), and only resting part of the grip on a bag.....with most of it hanging over in the rear. for me this helps in not letting recoil affect the grouping as much also. but......bottom line......i see my guns as hunting guns, and if i want a strictly bench shooter.....i'll use a grip with no stud.
i think that sling drop the hammer mentions is also made in pistol version. maybe someone can link to it. :?

After years of frustration with holsters, I switched to a sling about 10-12 years ago.  MUCH MORE BETTER!!!  A little over two years ago I swithched to the "Just Sling It" sling and it is even MORE better.  I use the sling as a shooting aid as well as a carrying device.  Shooting requires a long sling and carrying is much better with a short sling.  The "Just Sling It" has a quick adjust buckle that allows a quick, silent adjustment from long to short(or vice versa) in a snap.  I love mine.

i'm wondering how well that "just sling it" sling works with handgun scopes that shorten in eye relief, such as the burris? if it worked ok with scopes of this type, i could find interest in it also.
as i said earlier. i use the "super sling". it is a standard rifle sling, but shortens up really short, and works really good for me as is. always good to have lot's of options though. :D

Cris, Yes, mine is the exact same thing(the handgun sling).  I do use mine on the opposite shoulder from what he does in the illustration.  I always carried mine on the "off" hip before with the old type sling and just continued to do so with this one.  Never really thought about it.
KYODE, I don't recall it ever being a problem, but then I usually carry mine on low power all the time.  I'll have to check it out and report back.

For those of you that do not like a swiivel stud on the bottom of the rear grip, I have found an alternative that I am happy with.  I too did not like the stud on the bottom of the grip while shooting of off sand bags.  As an alternative, I installed the push button detachable flush mounted swivels that are made by Uncle Mike (model # QD 100).  With this system, the sling swivel plugs into a recessed recepticle so that when the sling is removed, the bottom of the weapon is clean and snag free as there is no stud protruding on the bottom side of the grip or forearm.  This works great for me as I do not use a Harris bipod and shoot more off of sand bags at the bench, or shooting sticks while in the field.  If one wanted to use a Harris bipod, then the thing to do would be to use the flush mount on the grip and a regular stud in the forearm.  It should be noted that I installed the flush mount on a grip that was made by Bullberry for my Encore Pistol, and on a forend that I made myself.  The rubber factory grips would not be compatable with the flush mount swivel.  However, I am assuming that a factory wood grip and forend would be compatible.

Thanks!  Thats just the ticket!  How did you install the buttcap insert?  I'm thinking you drilled out the front cap screw hole with a forstner bit?  Probably need to let the end of the base stick out a little to be flush with the buttcap surface?

Push Button Detachable - QD 100

Now easier to install, more versatile. Special flush-mount front and rear bases for stud-free profile when sling and swivels removed. Bases glue in place, no screws required.

I did use a forstner bit to drill the holes.  The grip was a custom grip made by Bullberry and did not have a metal cap on it like the factory rubber grip that I have.  It just had one hole on the bottom of the grip, dead center for the main grip bolt to pass through.  There was enough room between that hole and the edge of the base of the grip to drill the hole required for the flush mount recepticle.  I do not have a factory wood grip, so I do not know if they are configured the same as the one that I have.  I installed recepticle flush with the surface of the wood as I do not have the metal buttcap.

If you need any questions answered just ask I make the JSI slings. Going thru the big divorce and with her claiming everything I let the webb page drop and told her to have at it if will make her happy.  I suppy them to EA Brown, Virgin Valley and Bullberry.  They are adjustable for length in both carry and shooting position.  On my T/C pistols I have gone to either VV or Bullberry forearms with the hanger bar. I use the rifle forearm length so I can add a second sling swivel for a bipod.  I just got thru making a grip bolt with swivel sling for my rubber grip if anyone wants a pic.  I found some chrome spacers and longer hexhead bolt . I drilled and taped the bolt for a sling swivel bolt and used red loctite. Takes about 2 minutes to switch back to stock bolt.  The bolt was $1.25 and spacer was around $3.00.  Haven't snuck it to the range yet to see how it holds up. Plan on Piute Trail ( 250 miles with hundres of miles of side roads in southern utah....) and T/C pistol for the deer hunt this year.

I am trying to order the "Just Sling It" pistol model, but can't find the sight on line.

The URL for the company is http://www.jsi-guns-hunting-firearms.com/, but it yields a dead link for me.

Anybody know another source?

Ya might want to check out the use of portable drill holsters for G2 carry.  Saw it mentioned on another site and how well it works.

I made something similar to this. I bought all of the things that I needed except for the QD swivels for 8 or 9 dollars shipped.  The place sold webbing by the foot and all the hardware you need to make one. Once all of the stuff came in, I assembled it in about 5 minutes. I think that the website is http://americanhomeandhabitat.com/catagories/webbing.htm  .

I am making a set of custom grips for my contender and I am wondering if the bottom of the UM detachable insert is hollow so that it may be installed into the same hole for the grip bolt? Maybe drill it out? Kenny

I made a sling for the soft case the 14 incher fits in.  I sling it under my arm and unzip it 1/4 and it's holstered!  Slip my hand in, pull out the gun!  For carrying it into and out of the woods, I just zip'er up.

I was looking for a sling solution and on a tip from some website (probably this one) tried a drill holster. It was cheap (3.99 from Harbor Freight) and works well! I posted a pic on this website somewhere.

I do the same thing as dan and actually Graybeard recommended it several years ago.
Before I bought my 14" Contender, I loved the looks of the sling I saw in the pictures and I put a sling on mine very first thing.

The good things are it was very comfortable to walk with and to sit in a tree stand with it around my neck. I could bring it into play quickly and with a properly adjusted sling, I could use it to steady for a shot.

The bad things are that while climbing with a tree stand it would beat and bang on everything. If I bent over while walking it would come swinging forward if I did not pay attention. I was getting marks on my scope and gun from hitting things.

I also made a sling for my case. I carry the gun in my hand when walking in daylight, and the case is hanging on my back. The gun goes in the case for climbing or walking in the dark. Once in the tree, I secure the case close to my hands, half unzipped and the Contender is safe, protected and ready for action.
I have a picture on my computer somewhere and if I can find it I will post it if I can figure it out.
