FINALLY !!!!!
« on: October 16, 2004, 10:43:02 AM »
I have found myself a nice early production 6.5 Jap!
Just found it a a gun show in Carrollton Ga.
Probably 95% original. I already had to bring it home
and shoot it! Quite accurate, no recoil and VEEEERY
expensive Norma ammo! Gotta find a cheaper source!
As I was walking home from my range I saw a nice little
Whitetail milling around down by the creek, I think i'm
gonna take my new prize and investigate further!!!

I've always looked at them but i always passed on them because I don't have a clue about them.  About a little more than a year ago they were priced at $50 and now there hitting $150+up.  How many different calibers are there? Which one is a good one?             BigBill

Hay S. Sumner - the only thing I ever found in Carrollton, Ga. was an original blonde student at the university there (lol).  Actually, I found 3 of them, but not all at once (double lol).

Those Japanese 6.5s are some, or can be some nice rifles.  The quality, especially in a pre-war or early wartime production, can be very high.  Your's might have the crysanthemum (sp?) still stamped on the barrel.  And, don't let anyone kid ya about the ability of the 6.5 Arisaka round, it will do the job.

BigBill - I too have always passed on those rifles because I didn't know anything about the actions and had always heard the wrong thing from the wrong people - the same ones who said that because a Mauser was German made it wasn't any good - ha.  Those Arisakas are strong enough.  They came in two calibers - the 6.5x52 (I believe) Arisaka and the 7.7 Arisaka.  I believe the 7.7 was just a slightly overbore 30-06 that would chamber in the Japanese rifles but not our Garands.  I also understand the japanese built a few Garand type rifles in the 7.7 caliber.  Mikey.....

Congrats on the 6.5 Arisaka. I think you'll find they shoot quite well as do all the 6.5's. I have two, a T38 carbine and a T38 long rifle. Both are early no-series Nagoya. Buy Honeycutt's " Military Rifles of Japan " for info.
There is no question on the strength the T38 action, I think P.O. Ackley claims the actions are differentially hardened which I thought was kinda neat (traditional katana) to go to all that trouble in comparison to through or case-hardening.
I don't think either 6.5 or 7.7 has an accuracy edge over the other. I think the 6.5 has a very good bullet selection to choose from.

I have the 6.5x50, But the Japanese were terrible about
creating a different rim diminsion(sp)  for all of there cartridges!
They had rimmed , semi-rimmed, and rimless in their rifle cartridges!
Must have been a nightmare for their supply personell.
The rifle I have is in incredible condition, I have taken it apart
to clean it real good and there is no tool marks whatsoever!
It has been well fitted and polished.
