Triple 7 in 50 cal Side Hammer TC Renegade???
« on: October 15, 2004, 01:47:22 AM »
With the cleaner burning powders available today that apparently require much less cleaning time and effort, I am considering changing but am wondering if any of them would perform as good as the old Goex black powder does in my old 50cal TC Renegade rifle.  No way to tell except at the range I guess.

My old gun is scoped and with 100 grains of FF Goex, #11 CCI cap, and Hornady 240 gr sabot, will shoot 4-5 inch groups off a rest at 100 yards.  This combo has taken many a whitetail buck over the last 30 years.

If you have good or bad experience with a side hammer rifle using T7 or similar powder I would like to hear of your results.

Thanks for any info.

I also have a 50cal TC Renegade. I got it and started playing with triple7 and power belts in it. It had good groups, good enough for hunting. 2 inchs at 50 yards with open sights. I have been trying Goex and round balls and the gun shoots like crap. I have tried from 50 gr. of Goex to 100 gr. and it shoot so bad I would not consider using it for hunting with round balls. I am going to go back to triple7 and work up a load for hunting.  :D  I will leave my Goex for my Shiloh Sharps 45-70 loads. I am sold on triple7.

Redhawk

My gun never did like round balls and I wound up with the Hornady 240gr sabots as a best performer.  I have tried Powerbelts but they shot no better than the Hornadys.  I also heard and read where many hunters were disattisfied with PBs on deer.

Come back here and post the results of your T7 testing.  I am curious to see what you and others find/have found when using T7 in one of these side hammer guns.

I also have tried the Hornady 240gr sabots, but they are a pain to load. They are very tight, but I did also get good accuracy with them. I ordered some duplex sabots  with 195 gr dead centers from Precision rifle and will give them a shot as well. I have been using 90gr. of triple7 with CCI #11 caps. Clean up was simple.

Not sure which 240 Gr Hornadys you are using.  The 44 cals with the green sabots load pretty easy.  The 45 cals with the black sabots load much much harder.  The 44 cals will not shoot accurately in some guns, but they have in every one I have tried them in.  I agree that neither loads as easy as a powerbelt, but my wallet cannot stand the powerbelts.

Dave1,

I have a T/C Black Mountain Magnum .50 cal. and am here to tell you that it doesn't like T7 at all. Ignition fails miserably with the loose T7. After such a poor showing from the loose T7, I am hesitant to try the pellets.

But, go back to good old Goex FFG and she shoots just fine. I am using one of the T/C sabots and 300g .429 pistol bullets over 100g FFG.

Powerbelts are mfg at about .003 or so undersize of the bore diameter.  That is why they load so easy.  They are designed to expand to fit the bore upon firing.

That concept may be OK but I suspect the loose fit can and will allow some movement of the bullet off the power charge during the hunt and before I get around to firing at a deer.  I don't like or trust that concept because I clean and load my gun at start of the season and it stays loaded until I get a shot or until the end of the season.  Down here in Florida that is nine days of hard hunting.

I was hoping the T7 powder would be a better, more consistent, and more accurate performer in a side hammer type gun than the regular messy black powder but it doesn't sound like it.  I better stick to the BP load I have been using for 20+ years.
