45/70 come in two die set?
« on: October 22, 2004, 10:19:51 AM »
Hi,

I bought some dies for a 45/70 that don't have any ID on them. One says 45/70FL and the other says 45/70DA. I see that most have 3 dies. Am I missing one? Thanks ba_50.

Yes.

First die decaps and resizes, the second seats and crimps the bullet.

Does that mean yes, I am missing one or that I have a complete set? I think you mean it is a two die set. Thanks. ba_50

My Hornady die set has three dies. the 45/70 is a long straight walled case that needs expanding on the case mouth to keep it from colapsing when you seet the bullet. You should be ok with what you have, providing the full length sizer deprimes and the other die is a seating and crimping die. You somehow should get the case mouth belled, especially with cast loads.

Yes to both...

Some of the earlier die sets were 2-die sets, but all companies are now making the .45-70 set with 3 dies.

The "second" die is as explained above, it is used to bell the case mouth.

It would help if you knew who the manufacturer is...

Buy a Lyman 'M' die for expanding the 45-70.  Doesn't beat brass up like a regular expander plug does.
