50 70 govt.??

ok maybe im just old but a 50 70 on a h&r ive wanted a long time i just cant find a barrel blank in the dia. ive got a hang up on big slow bullets guess thats why i own a 72 cal. muzzy on a h&r.  any body know where to find a barrel 4 my winter project???

Contact Badger Barrels in Wisconsin, he will make you a full octagon in 50-70 or even 50-90.  You will either have to cut a lug off of another H&R barrel or have a lug manufactured through some plans I have for making them.

Just kickin at the campfire here but I was reading on another site of a guy that reamed a 45-70 out to 45-120!!  He shoots black in it as it does not produce the pressures smokeless does....says it works fine...if your using black you might think of convertin a 45-70 to that big boy caliber.... :roll:  he also says the 45-70 is for sissys after pullin the trigger on a 45-120 Handi with 500 plus grain lead bullets!!  :shock:  A big beefy Classic barrel fitted at the factory might be a good platform for your little dream gun...... As usual....keep us informed if ya decide to do it

how about a# for badger???ive still got a couple of blank lugs left and a couple of factory lugs somewhere around here. my 72  , 54, 762*25 are all octagon so no problems there.oh deadeye i know about kick i was loading my 72 with 150 gr rs. 20 in bbl. talk about kick took 3 months to get sighted in . two good shots was all i could grt in at a time.thanks all JB

How about taking a 50 cal huntsman barrel and having a 50-70 chamber cut in it?

I'm not willing to go to that trouble, but if NEF were to offer a 50-70 I'd jump at it :grin:

I would never want a 45-120

#1 reason is they are harder than heck to get accurate load for in the 1 in 18 twist let alone a 1 in 20 such as the Buffalo Classic or Handi-Rifle barrels.

#2 reason the cartridge is just plan not historic, it did not exist back in the great buffalo harvest era.

#3 the brass for it is just flat out tooooo expensive and unless you are doing it for long range shooting the 45-70 can do anything the 45-120 can.

Longcruise, What a great idea!!!, chambering a 50 caliber Huntsman barrel to a 50-70!! What do some of you aspiring gunsmith/machinists type think?....<><.... :grin:

Man, I would buy a frame and the barrel if H&R/NEF every offered a .50-70. They should go with the Green Mountain barrel, as I have heard the barrel and the twist rate shoot incredibly well. This is America's first centerfire military cartridge, and it is what William F. Cody used in a surplus Trapdoor to earn his nickname, Buffalo Bill, supplying meat for the workers on the Kansas & Pacific railroad.
But  for some reason the manufacturers treat it with no respect.

Sorry but the .500 dia of a .50 cal muzzleloader is not the same .510 dia as the 50-70 cartridge.  I don't think re-chambering the .50 cal Huntsman barrel will work.

But either a Green Mountian http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/ or a Badger Barrel will.

Good points Montanan.  But, all is not lost! :grin:   I have successfully shot the 450 grain 50-70 slugs from my .50 ml gun when they are sized down to .503 or .504.  Most .50 ml guns slug at about .503 to .506.

OTOH, I wonder if there is enough meat in the breech plug area of the Huntsman to allow the chambering?

i dont thinkthe 50 huntsman barrel isTOUGH ENOUGH  nor big enough....my 72 muzzy is 1and1/8 oct.it was CUSTOMIZED to fit..i dont think my bank account will allow me a good gr.mout. barrel :cry: but ill keep looking...i think im going to build another 445 sm.maybe 444 but the kick of latter just kills me :eek:
