What's a newly built VZ-24 .338-06 worth?
« on: January 19, 2003, 03:04:44 AM »
A gunsmith at the gunshow this weekend, has a rifle he built using a VZ-24 mauser action.  It has an Adams & Bennett barrel, boyds JRS laminated stock, drilled and tapped with Redfield bases, Win M70 style 3 position safety.     Also, the whole rig was blasted and teflon coated.  He claims 6 shots thru it to verify chambering, functioning, etc, and I believe him.  Anyway, he's asking $495 for the rig.  Seems a bit high to me, but for a new .338-06, might be worth it.  Only big issue is weight, as the barrel is a fairly heavy contour.

Anyway, any opinions?

Tom

It has the cheapest barrel and the cheapest stock available, most likely little more than drop ins.  The blasted Teflon finish is interesting, but not a labor intensive job or that expensive. The Winchester safety probably is an add on also. No mention of bolt bending, trigger added or trigger guard styling. It doesn't sound like he has done much work.

338/06 is semi wildcat, but Weatherby is making 338/06 A-Square ammo now. Probably not going to be able to get a box at Wal-mart. Basically a reloading proposition. Dies will cost a little more than Standard. On the plus side it's a great caliber.

If you can you deal with that, offer $350 and walk if he doesn't come to $400

I would simply walk away from it and never turn back. :(

...and buy a used 338 Mag, and then buy two CZ Mausers, and take the remainder of the money and take your family out to dinner someplace nice.
....make it count
