Marbles sight for the Buffalo Classic
« on: October 16, 2004, 08:47:29 PM »
Ahhh I remembered my questions!!!!! :-D  I was curious if anyone has used the Marbles Tang/Peep sight on their Buffalo Classics and what they though about it? Also I was looking for a load for Alaskan Moose, Brown Bear and American Bison? I understand shot placement is the best load and I will be 100 yards or less. I have full confidence that the right 45/70 is powerful enough to handle these animals in a quick way. Any ideas would help. Thanks again. Shoot safe. KW

What sights do you have on your Buffalo Classic right now?  If you have the newer sights such as the front globe Lyman 17AUG and rear Williams peep... the only thing I would do is change the front globe sight to the Low Profile Lyman 17A.

You load depends on you.... If it were me I would be using a soft cast 500-gr Elk Buster which has a good flat nose and is designed for hunting.

To be honest though, in 45-70 the 405-gr JSP will take anything in North America when using smokeless loads.  I have a friend who when using his C. Sharps in 45-70 used the factory Remington 405-gr load that went complete penitration side to side on a 3 yr old cow bison that he shot at the Sand Hills Ranch in Neb. the bullet was not recovered which means it had enough getty up and go to keep going.

He has also dumped a large bull elk with no bullet recovery using the same bullet and load.

His reported shot was at about 80 yards.

But, if you want the Marbles Peep Sight on the Buffalo Classic, I believe the one they use is the same one for the Browning High Wall.  Either way you will have a finely sighted rifle.

Good luck on your hunts  :D

Hi Montanan thanks for the reply. I was thinking of the Marbles sight because it looks like it's tougher and has more adjustment than the Williams ( I plan on hunting in some tough terrain). I haven't got my BC yet, but am planning on getting one very, very soon. I live in the weird country of California and it's taking a little bit more time than I thought  This leads me to my next question. Is the sight that comes with the BC mounted on the reciever or the barrel. If the barrel, would the sight hold it's settings with repeated use of the action? Thanks for the help....... Hey also how many grains are you using behind that 500 grn pill? Can I use 777 as a BP load for the BC? Thanks again, hope I am not annoying anyone with my green horn questions. Shoot safe.  KW

The Marbles Tang sight is a far better choice than the Williams sight.  You will get much better elivation at your known ranges of shooting.

The Williams sight will hold it's settings no problem, I just don't prefer it's look and low profile on a rifle such as the Buffalo Classic and it's style.

With smokeless powder I am using AA 5744 using 30.0 gr with a Fed 215 LMRP

No annoyance here, I'm always glad to be of help.  Yes to using Black Powder or substitutes in the Buffalo Classic.  I personally would not use 777 as I got high presure indicators on my cases from it and the cost is sky high as well compared to Real Black Powder.  Now with Black Powder loads I can help you there as I have stopped using Pyrodex or any other substitute BP Powders period.  The cost of using BP at $10.50 a pound compared to 777 at $17.99 a pound is far less anyway.

Here is a link to my website The Montanan and then click on Introduction to Black Powder Cartridge Loading by Chuck Raithel

One of our own here on the forum has a good write up as well on
Black Powder loading for the Handi-Rifle

I hope this helps ya out  :D
