45 ACP Mutation

I was reloading some of my 45 ACPs today and while brushing out some primer pockets, I noticed a case that seems to have a small pistol primer pocket instead of a large pistol primer.  I found out basically because my large primer pocket brush didn't fit into this one.  The case's headstamp says:

WIN NT
45 AUTO

I don't understand why this one in particular is that way, as I have other cases with the same headstamp, but they have large primer pockets though.  Could have been an error at production, but you never know...  What do you think?  Patriot

Winchester NT (Non- Toxic) ammo is their line of Super clean ammo for use indoors. I believe I read before that it uses a small primer.   KN

KN is correct.  I believe they were using the large pockets in earlier runs.  But Winchester, for some reason, didnt want these cases to be reloaded so they switched to the smaller pockets to discourage reloaders.  I remember reading a warning about this posted at the local gun shop.  I think guys have loaded the large pocket cases with no problems.  But if it were me Id toss em.  .45 auto is a dime a billion.  No need messin around.

Interesting.  So it would be better to ditch all WIN NT cases for safety, or just the ones I might come across with small primer pockets?  I'm kinda confused on which ones to watch out for.  I've found only one so far.  It was a helpful case in the long run.  Made a great dummy round to check and make sure I put enough taper crimp on them 200gr. FMJ SWCs. :grin:   Didn't move one bit after the test. :wink:   Thanks for your confirmation on that find; never knew they existed. :D   Patriot
