m77 compact
« on: November 08, 2004, 05:14:59 PM »
Anyone using a compact for hunting.
I am wanting the compact 308 and have been concered with accuracy of the shorter barrel.  I currently have a rem. vs in 308 that is just too heavy to carry when stalking or walking long ways into and out of the woods.
If yu have a compact what do you think and what are your 100yd groups.

davis1as;

I've got a compact in 7mm-08 cal. stainless steel, grey laminate stock.
Could not be more pleased with it. Now it would not shoot factory ammo worth a hoot. Spent over a hundred dollars on ammo. Some would not even group on an 8-1/2X11' piece of paper. But since I handloaded for my Model 7FS Rem. in 7mm-08, I gave it a try. Started using IMR-4064, heard it was good for that caliber. And since it did not like all the 140gr. bullets in factory loads. Tried a Sierra 120gr. Spitzer ahead of 4064. Choose that bullet because of the shorter barrel, i could get more velocity with a lighter bullet. First group with it was under an inch for five at 100yds. Now it's the only load I use in it. Plus it's a pleasure to carry in the woods. I have a Sightron 2.5X8 variable on it.
As I said before VERY WELL PLEASED!  :grin:  :grin:  :grin:
