I have a question about the most common parts that wear out first on the excellent Marlin 39A rifles or 39M carbines. Sure could use your help on this one...
My 39M Mountie was made in 1967 and after functioning flawlessly for decades, it had developed an occasional failure to feed over the last year. The action is still as smooth as ever, it would just fail to chamber a round or sometimes get "stuck" mid-stroke. Rolling it on its side and tapping on the receiver seemed to reposition the offending round so it would chamber OK.
After experiencing the same problems, perhaps even more so, during today's outing at the range, I figured a good cleaning was in order. During disassembly, when backing out the screw that holds it, the "Cartridge Cutoff" at the top of the receiver (a small piece of spring metal) broke in half. I suspect it was brittle and gave up the ghost today, but no stress was placed on it when backing off the screw.
Anyway, I plan to contact Marlin to not only get that part, but to also replace the "ejector spring", "carrier rocker spring" and "cartridge guide spring". My thinking is that if one spring has hardened from use & wear, then the others could be right behind it.
