Todd Jarrett I'm not

 The range I shoot at does not allow rapid fire shooting. I've watched the guys on TV do it and it didn't look that hard. Yesterday my son and I where trail riding on the 4 wheeler and stoped at Beaver creek. A shallow spot about 50 yards wide with tall rock walls on both sides and you can see down the creek a mile or more. At this point let me say I know you are not supposed to shoot at water. I couldn't  resist shooting at a tree stump about 30 yards from me stuck in the water. After shooting it a bunch of times and doing very well I might add, I thought I would try some of the rapid fire stuff I've seen on TV. Man I Suck! I tried doing 5 or 6 rounds just as fast as I could pull the trigger. My first shot would be right on, the second a little high 3 and 4th way off and the 5th and 6th you could see hit 60 to 80 yards down the river. Even though my Kimber shooting 230 gr white box Whincester does not have much recoil it was way more than I could keep on target shooting as hard as I could go. My 12 year old son was dieing laughing saying that I sucked so I let him try. He is a very good shot, maybe better than me but his was even more dramatic. First round dead on,2nd 50 yards down the river third off the bluff somewhere. I consider myself a fairly good shot but this humbled me. I have a new respected for you guys that can knock down those little steele targets in a matter of seconds. Oh well, we had a lot of fun and got to bust some caps. Just thought I share our day with you all. :D

Paul - as I recall, you decided to go for a 45 after a nasty encounter in the woods when youwere with your son and you had anly a 22 to keep you both safe from harm.

Todd Jarrett shoots at targets and is a practiced competitor.  Practice at what ya'll got that 45 for, making your first shots as rapid as you can get on target, but deliberate in your focus.  I think it was Elmer Keith who said something like - a steady hand and a cool trigger will beat simply quickness every time - I would translate that to - practice your presentation and first shot hits, and make your point of aim deliberate - if you put that front sight on your target and squeeze that trigger, you should hit every time.

I am a bad boy - I have this little trick that worked for me in Vietnam and on occassion I will use it at the range to show some newer shooters that a 15 round magazine and spray and pray techniques don't always work. - Me and one other shooter on the range, 10 yds distance from the targets (5 of them) with the call to take them all - he empties his magazine into the first target, needing to reload for the other four.  I simply placed  head shots, one near twixt the eyes on each target, leaving 4 rounds left (8 shot mags and one in the chamber) and re-holstered before he was through with his first mag.

You carry that 45 for protection - practice for that first and you will find yourself back at that stream busting up apples for the birds and small critters at distances you never thought possible, and havin' a ball doing it.  That's an awful lot of fun with a 22, but a lot more with a 45.  Mikey.

Thanks for the advice Mikey. Sounds like a good plan to me. Like you said I do spend almost all my time trying to make a good first shot. Was just so surprised how hard it is to stay on target in rapid fire.
Have a great new year Mikey

one bullet where it counts, then move to the next target.   there is no point in dumping multiple rounds into one target when the first hit did the job; your just wasting ammo.   it looks good on t.v. and the movies, but dont do squat in the real world except get your tail in a jam.   but i like it when the other guy shoots like that; it increases your chances.

I live in Mtn. Grove and hunt on Beaver Creek. Got my first 1911 today. A Kimber Team Match II. Love it. Just wanted to see if we were on or near the same Beaver Creek.

Got to rember most the time those gun are so worked on  with loads so light as to make major with comps is why they can shoot like that... if its a stock gun match  they us a 40 cal most of the time with a heavyer gun and it loaded down to what jsut barely functions ...

Was reading a article where they gun said most pros dont use 45's anymore not sure how true that is but..

Hey Rev, I wasn't far from you. My father in law owns a farm not far from AVA at a little place called Smallet. My son and I where on his 4 wheeler about 5 miles from the farm not far from the old Rome Bridge
if you know where that is. Your going to love that Kimber. I carry mine about all the time. Just took it all apart and cleaned it up about an hour ago. Man their great guns. I like all the 1911s but love my Kimber.
