Revolver Barrel Break-in???
« on: February 26, 2003, 09:58:25 AM »
Buying a new revolver soon, that will be used for handgun hunting, that's why I'm posting this question here.  Buying a RSRH 7 1/2 for information purposes.

Is barrel break-in recommended?  Has anyone not done this, and still maintained good accuracy?

I always break-in my rifles with a 1 shot clean for first 10, then 2 shots clean second 10, and so on for the first 50.  Then it's just kill one deer clean, kill one elk clean and so on....

Thanks,

DoubleA,
While I am unconvinced that "break-in" is required your system is even more involved than the standard procedure. First 10 are 1 shot clean; followed by five - five shots clean and then use the weapon as you would normally cleaning after each use.
Pistols are typically less sensitive to copper fouling due to their lower pressures and velocities. Follow your intuition and use whatever method has worked for you in the past.

My break in for a magnum revolver is to shoot 200 jacketed bullets to smooth up the barrel, clean it real well and than only shoot cast bullets in it after that.  A good cast bullet is generally better for most uses than jacket types.

Ever considered fire-lapping? I bought a kit several years back and that's the only way I go now. Quick and easy. Very little fouling or leading afterwards. Smooths things up very nicely, the way they should come from the factory(any factory).

Thanks all,
Still gonna shoot one clean first 5 then 2 next ten, then every 5 for twenty...  Gives me something to do at the range, and that's how I do my rifles, keeps things the same...

I have great things about fire lapping by experienced folks, which I am not,   But I still enjoy the old way, and you can't mess it up, I know, my rifles easily shoot less than moa....  those being 6mm remington, 7mm remington and when I 'play' with the ammo I do extremely better than moa........

Thanks,
