does any one else have a hawken .54 muzaloder in percusin. i got mine as a kit gun and put it together im 14 just wonderin if any one else has one. its very accurate.
Trapper Zach, Congratulations on building your own gun. You picked a fine style.
You will find out, as you go along, that in all likelyhood the .54 Hawken in kit form, is the most popular of all the kit guns.
I would suspect there are 3 to 4 Hawken rifles to every 1 of any other style. Although it is said that the Southern Mountain style is gaining in favor among the kit builders...it still has a way to go to catch up.
The Hawken is a rifle that captures ones imagination the moment you see it. It has all the looks, and charm of that rifle we dreamed about when we were kids. It say's.... Mountain Man, The Fur Trade, Jeremiah Johnson, Buffalo, and Grizzly Bear!
And, of course it has quite a bit of real historical value, even though the actual numbers of real Hawken rifles built by the Hawken Bros, or Gemmer. in St.Louis, MO from around 1825 to 1865 or so, are far fewer than we think.
The Hawken is, in all likelyhood, more popular today than it has ever been.....Simply because it is affordable.
In 1830 / 1840 it would have cost you six months wages to buy such a rifle, and a so-called Kentucky rifle less than half that cost.
So, once again congratulations on your new rifle. I am impressed by your age and I do wish you well. You have made a good choice, keep up the good work.
Respectfully, Russ
