Could I have some input on what kind of accuracy many of the 17 HMRs that are out there produce? I have a Ruger M77/17 that has produced a 7/16" three shot group at 100 yds.

using Hornady brand ammo. Any answers would be greatly appreciated. Patriot

Haven't tried 5 shot groups yet...just got through testing accuracy on a couple other brands out there (CCI, Federal) this past weekend. When I go shooting next, I will let you know what I come up with if it's anything good.

I've been shooting the Hornady ammo. I haven't shot any 100 yd groups but I seem to be able to make hits on small things 100+ yards away. I'm shooting a CZ-452.

You can expect 1/2 to 3/4 moa 5 shot 100yd groups when the barrel is broken in well after 200-300 rounds. Don't be surprised if you have 4 shots touching and a flyer, it's real common.

I have two, One Contender pistol, One Contender rifle. Both will shoot 1/2" 100 meter groups on a calm day. KN

got a marlin VS 17 HMR, got it zeroed in today @40 yards. it touches all 5 shots, a real good group, but @100 yards its 4" high or less. no complaints i use it for tree rats @ 40 yards.

i don't like the 4" difference from 40 to a 100
hornady 17 rims, mayby it needs more rounds through it. seems like a lot of $ for what you get. but its nuts on @40-45 yards GREAT for them tree rats, they don't have a chance.

With a scope mouinted ~1.5" above the bore, sighted in dead on at 100yds, you'll be no more than 1/2" high or low from 25yds to 75 yds.

So far my Ruger 77-17 has been a consistent 1.5" to 1.75" five shot shooter at 100 yards. If that's the best it's gonna do I'll dump it like I have all other Ruger's I've ever owned except the one Accusport Bisley .45 Colt which is actually a quite nice gun.

I'm gonna give it awhile longer and next spring will be trying a wider variety of loads but really I think it's gonna be a loser. Knew I should have gotten a Marlin. My Marlin 882SS .22 Mag shoots rings around this thing. Always under an inch at 100 yards for five shots.

I tested my Marlin 917VS two weeks ago with both hornaday 17 gr. v-max and cci 20 gr game points. I did about 10 5 shot groups with each at 100 yards. The hornadays averaged just under 1 inch and the cci 20gr averaged about .75 inches at 100 yards. At 200 yards they were both a bout 2-2.5 inch 10 shot groups, no 5 shot groups at 200 yards. I only have about 150 rounds through it total so its not completely broken in, i suspect the groups will shrink a little more after I put a few more rounds with it.

Well, I'm glad to see this thread came back to life. As for my promise to post what my 5'ers would do, I'm in the same boat as Graybeard. I aved about 1.5" -2" with 5-shot groups using the Hornady ammo. Hey, at least our Rugers have something in common: consistency, eh GB? I'm sure there are better rifles out there, but if I want to go even further with accuracy, I might get a match-grade custom barrel from Krieger installed or something. But I would stick with the main outfit I have, as I have found the trigger and the stock quite comfortable. I also may get a trigger job done anyway eventually, as it might improve my groups a tad. I'm still wanting to get a more powerful scope for my 17 though. I currently have a 3-9x on there, and I can barely see the holes from this puppy at 100yds. But I keep the circle targets quartered and it does it's job I guess. My preference in scope selection is more toward the Leupold Vari-X II series, 4-14x50mm in silver finish. I think silver would complement the target gray finish really well. Nice to see more posts coming on this thread; I think it will help those who have considered buying a 17 HMR because it gives them a good idea of what to expect. Stay safe.

I have a Marlin and it will easily group dime size
at 100 yards if I do my part. it groups about 1/4 inch high at 50 yards.
I moved out to 120 yards and it groups the same as at 100 yds.
at 140 yards (max on my range) the groups start to open up to about the size of a quarter. This was bench rested on a calm day.
Mine shoots all brands of ammo equally well as far as I am concerned.
But, as a side note, My Marlin .22 magnum will do almost as well
grouping. although it has about an inch of drop at 140 yards.

I have marlin 917 V. It wears a Millet gold Buck 4X16 Wiht A.O.
I can only shoot 50 and 75 yard in my back yard but get sub .05" gruops reularly wiht ALL major brands of ammo. Remmie gimmi sug 0.5 at 75 yards,
Haven't yet put the rifle basix trigger in her yet, gotta help!
Wonderful varmint rifle. Kills stray cats real fast and is hard on tree rates.

I have a Marlin 17VS that will do dime sized groups at 100 yards with the Hornady 17gr ammo, the groups open to about quarter size with the CCI's. Which still is't bad but I got spoiled with the Hornadys.
