20 gauge Youth slug shell
« on: October 20, 2004, 09:22:06 AM »
I am looking for a Youth 20 gauge slug load, for my 10 year old daughters first deer hunt this coming November.
So far we are using Rem's 20 gauge slug, advertised velocity is 1580 (??) witha  5/8 oz slug (foster type).
She is using a single shot H&R Pardner shotgun, youth sized.....I added a pound of lead shot to the stock bolt hole, ported it at home and added a pad to raise the comb a bit for her.  It is at my gun smith to get the forcing cone lengthened and have it drilled and tapped for a Red Dot scope.

Are there any commercially available low recoil 20 ga. slug loads...?
Can I load a few of my own w/o a lot of special equipment (read : press)?
Paper hulled with Triple 7 would do the trick Im sure.....

Any help/advice is appreciated!

I do not know of any low velocity slug loads.
You will need some kind if press. or you can look on ebay and fine a lee load all in 20 ga for not a lot of money. you will use a hammer and the dies to size the shell and form the crimp. THey are slow and do not to a great job but will work. then you will need to find the slugs and so on.

you may be better off putting a better recoil pad on the stock or find a 20 ga auto you do not need to keep the tube fully loaded just make her load only one shell at a time. the autos vent a lot of gas to cycle the action so they kick a lot less. them H & R single shots do kick hard because of the desing of the gun.
