My handgun hunt against evil.
« on: October 21, 2004, 12:11:59 PM »
Well, I finally got him. The evil armadillo that has been destroying hedges and planted oats. We first thought it was a hog the damage was so severe. However, this one was smart. Not the normal lollygagging dillo by any means. Well, and handgun hunt this had to be. No shotgun ammo around, just myself, the demon digger, my S&W Model 19 nickel, pearl grips, .38 Spl. SWC 158gr. slugs, and a hatred between the two of us. I was able to sneak around the brushline, watching my opponent stand on his haunches, for he was being his normal suspicious, alert self. I closed the distance to within 7yds, I could have sworn he knew of my intentions, he was daring me to act. The nickel finished angel breathed with fire as  the adversary of horticulture flipped over and over for 10 seconds before laying on it's back giving the victory to me. Double lung hit, it could last no longer. My handgun hunt is complete.

Actually, my wife wants to get him mounted so he's in the freezer until time to turn him over to the taxidermist. I told her I was gonna have him mounted in a position of him digging-up one of her plants :)   I know what you guys are thinking.....How did I keep my wits about me under such stress......well gentlemen, it takes training. Hours upon hours at the range, and staying focused on your task and objective. I could brag and say I had won the standoff in single-action with one shot, but that would be boastful, setting a bad example for my proteges'. But thank you. I'll be selling my award winning instructional CD,"When the armored division attacks", and following completion of the proficiency exam, you will receive part II, "Make them dig their own graves". Sorry it took so long to get back to you guys, the newspapers and movie producers would'nt leave me alone about it.

Oh, Van,,,,did you happen to deer hunt near Eldorado, Tx in the '90's.

Mohawk, I'll have to get the map out. Not sure where Eldorado, TX is.  I've only been in Texas since the early '80s.  Hunt mostly N.E. and south of San Antonio.  Also south Arkansas around Eldorado :D ....Van

Yeah, I thought about doing an outdoor show. But I'll see what movie offers I get first. More money!!

Van, I used to deer hunt with a Van in San Antonio. Thought you may have been him. Eldorado, Tx is west on I-10 to the far west end of the Hill Country. Between Sonora and Ozona. Schleicher County. Great deer hunting there, and so many Turkeys they were a pest.

Turkeys? You worry about pesky turkeys when there's those unspeakably horrible dillers abounding?  You must continue your quest to keep the populace safe!

:cb2: I saw the title, "My handgun hunt against evil," and I thought he'd done shot a Democrat.   Was the evil armadillo wearing a Kerry bumper sticker? If not, make sure he is in the movie.  :)

Just a couple miles down the road....but not a single 'dillo in sight.  I have more than my share of SKUNKS on my lease though.

I remember when I was a kid hunting a lease in Laredo with my grandpa and some of his friends.  They shot 2 'dillos and brought them back to camp.  That night they made chili with the nasty critters along with a HUGE rattlesnake they shot that evening.  TALK ABOUT "REDNECK STEW"!!

If you DO get yours mounted, would you mind sending me a note letting me know who you found to do it, and $$how much$$ they charged?  I think every native should have a "texas speedbump" mounted and proudly displayed on the coffee table!  (Ok...maybe just displayed in my reloading room...haven't cleared it with the wife yet)

We are getting him mounted pretty much because we don't have one of these yet. I use Rheinlander Taxidermy here in Austin. He does great work. He's master level and it shows. A guy I work with shot a bobcat with the same 6mm Remington rifle he used in the Vietnam War and it tour the cat up pretty good. He used Rheinlander and the mount was great. His studio is impressive too. His price list shows a full body for $450. May be a little high but considering the work and his quality I think it is worth it. Plus, I have to use him. My wife is picky with taxidermist and she said Terry(Rheinlander) is the "cutest" one.

As far as eating them, I haven't. But I know some people that prefer it. They said it is very close to pork and holds it's juices well.

This was still kind of dangerous. Next time you might be better off with a .45 Colt. Did I mention that you need a .45?

Mohawk: You're another very droll Texan who knows how to tell a story and get me laughing. There was a fellow on the old shooters.com board who wrote often about his ongoing agricultural  "swine jihad" against wild hogs that had us laughing too.
Thanks for lightening up my day.

i took my jab at the dark side today.  before my sbh took a dirt nap, i used it to cold SMOKE! a very fat porquipine.   he was about 65 feet up and looked really surprised when my slug caught him right after sunrise.  after a 65 foot freefall, i delivered the coupe-de-grace.   another victory for the good guys.

Dangerous? Are you kidding?

Picture a possum with armor plating. He's faster than a speeding turtle and meaner than a jack rabbit. Able to leap tall ant hills in a few strides. They are the terror of the termite mounds and eat yellow jacket larvae with no fear of the stinging bugs.

Now would you want to pit your life up against such a critter? (Asks GB with tongue in cheek)

This one was the most damaging dillo I've ever seen. I ignore them most of the time. He cost us over $300 in damage not to mention a lot of time. Literally, we were surprised there were no hog tracks in his rooting area. This guy was way too over zealous with his looking for grubs. Imagine working 20hrs a week on a food plot, watering, and cultivating it in the hottest humidity of summer only to have a dillo destroy it :x

Dangerous?!!!  Back in High school (1960's) me and my buddy use to hunt armadillos with Rem. 740's, .30-06's  with full metal jacket military surplus cartridges.  That's about the minimum I'd safely go in the diller woods with.  Most dangerous part of hunting them was getting too close.  They explode like a bomb and if you were under 20 yards away the shrapnel could be hazardous. :)  :) .....Van

Wayne about jobs in S.A.  Don't really know much of what's going on.  I work for the DOD.  Lots of jobs in the IT field in this area.  In 2006 they will start producing Toyota trucks in a new factory that they are building.  Should be a couple of 1000 jobs there and the pay I understand will be pretty danged good.  Good luck
