GPR Hammer Position
« on: October 27, 2004, 02:27:04 AM »
On my GPR I notice my hammer does not center on the nipple, it just barley goes over the nipple.
Yesterday at the range I was using a hot shot nipple an the hammer would not slam all the way, it caught the edge of the cap.  Shot this last year and I didn't have this problem.  Changed back to the nipple that came with the rifle .  Is this normal for the GPR?

I've seen many hammers not strike directly on the nipple of GPR's.  The difference between the two nipples might be the thickness of the metal surrounding the flash channel.  Usually, I just use a file to thin the metal until the hammer fits.

Best of luck and welcome to Greybeard,

Yes, it's normal for the GPR to have nipp problems. Usually the "hammer fall" problem is from  OVER TIGHTENING the lock side screw!

Black Powder rifles aren't cannons,,it's just a simple gun. After cleaning, the lock should fit in it's mortise with just thumb pressure. Then the side screw set just too hold the lock in place(inch-pounds of torque) and no more. If you tighten that screw really snug,,,then the hammer is forced too the side,it'll never hit any nipp proper then!

It's a gun,,so every thing needs to be really tight right??(wrong),.I'd almost ask what "hot shot" nipp.? but it doesn't matter. Theres about 4-5 that make after market nipps for the Lyman/Gp models,,Knights' "red-hot" in 6mmx.75mm works great. I've been there/here,,done it,,know it..seen it 100 tymes. Back the screw off the lock.,,,,,,,,,,

luck to ya,
i'm a realist. i've not seen it all, but man ,,I've Been Around the block once or twice

I FOUND THE AFTERMARKET NIPPLE LIKE THE HOT SHOT ,UNCLE MIKE 'S ALL
WILL GIVE YOU A PROBLEM.I FOUND A COMPANY CALLED THUNDER RIDGE  HAS THE CORRECT NIPPLE FOR THE GUN.
THE LENGHT OR SHAFT ON THE AFTERMAKET NIPPLE IS TOO LONG AND WILL ALSO INTERFERE WITH THE 1/2 COCK POISITION WITH THE HAMMER
I CAN TELL YOU IT TOOK TWO TRYS (SHIPPING) TO GET THE CORRECT NIPPLE
