I personally wouldn't do it, but if you want to get close enough for the round to be effective, then it might work.   How fast can you reload and shoot at a charging bear?   I would much rather have that round in a quick lever action.

You might wanta' read this article - good 35 Remington Load Data for Levers...

Pay particular attention to the 280/290gr cast bullet load described near the end of the article!

GOOD LUCK!   :D

A backup makes a huge difference and lotsa' sense.    In that case, you might like to read this article "Getting The MOST From Your 44 Magnum"...   I found it very interesting.

This one below about pressures in the 444 Marlin can be applied to the 44 Mag, too.

The .35 Rem is totally adiquate for Black Bear.  You need to be close and able to shoot it.  I personally carry the 200gr flat point in mine.  I like the higher speed.  Most of the heavier .35 cal bullets are made for higher velocities than the contender can obtain, and the recoil at those velocities is brutal in a hand gun.  The heavier the bullet and higher the velocity the heavier the recoil.  (And those guys with .454 Casuls think they have something).  I ended up putting the shoulder stock on mine just to sight the scope in, and work up my loads.  (Yes I know I'm not suposed to do that, but I was hurting and no one else was there).

BUT!!! Make sure you have a good back-up.  If it should move just as you shoot, or a mired of other things go wrong, it could turn nasty real fast.

I've taken Moose with mine, (.35 Rem 12"barrel)  And they can get just as nasty if they see you before you shoot.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
