Tired of Shooting Paper
« on: November 04, 2004, 11:03:20 AM »
Well deer season opens in my area in 11 days and I'm getting tired of shooting paper targets but need to keep practicing.  What else do you guys shoot at the range to keep your practicing fun?

Hay Camel:  unfortunately some ranges won't allow breakable targets except for trap and skeet.  My range won't allow cans and I haven't heard of a range, in years, that has allowed glass bottles.

As for the trap and skeet shooters - I'm glad the fellas at my range are such crummy shots - they leave a lot of those birds unscathed and those make excellent targets.  If you're shooting the 50 yd line you have a 4" target - good offhand practice.  If you can stretch it to 100 yds those birds get pretty small.  Best thing of all is they are reactive (bust up), bio-degradable, come in two different colors (front and back - lol), and are free.  Other than that, I have taken my paper target after becoming so frustrated with my overly large groups, balled it up and stood and shot at it until it was confetti.  It reacted pretty well, so it wasn't a 'still' target.

Some guys hang ballons from their target stands - they are tough to hit in a wind but they are adjustable for size if you want a challenge (lol).

There are also 'Duelling Trees'.  I don't know what caliber you shoot but those reactive targets are fun to pratice with, especially if you have a hunting or shooting buddy whose skills are on par with yours.  Well, hth.  Mikey.

If you're hitting those paper targets the way you want to, then you're ready. Stop over training and take a break. Do a little more casual practice a few days before the season.

just started doing it this past week, it seams like it is helping with the hand gun a lot
bigest thing ive learned is to spin an move from the hips not the arms an torso

Steel circles of various sizes hanging like a gong.  Makes a great ringing sound when you get a good hit!

cd's work good for targets too just see how many shots in the center hole you can get just attach a paper plate or other target and have at it

Lollypops and golf balls. The lollypops explode like crazy and the golf balls give you a different distance to shoot at everytime you hit it.

Be Safe,

I shoot at a farm where nearly anything goes as far as reactive targets are concerned. I am sure you are restricted as to what you can shoot at the range, you may want to ask if bowling pins are acceptable most often you can pick them up at the bowling alleys for little or no cost. they seem to take a lot of abuse are easy to clean up after and even the kids can topple them with .22 caliber rifles.

Clay pigeons are fun. When you hit them, they often just disappear like a lamp going out.

jugs of ice, pumpkins, or the wifes leftover biscuits just use caution
on the biscuits the crust can be like shrapnel

My Uncle and I shoot golf balls we string up at 50 yards.  The golf balls, when hit, go spinning, and if you knock them off the string they do some silly dancing on the backstop.  Of course there was the time my Uncle was shooting my GP-100 using .38 LRN I handloded.  The golf ball jumped a bit but not much else.  We got down range to find the ball was near split in half from the hit   .  Most of the time the rounds just blow through them, but then again its mostly rifle we shoot at em.

Here in middle Tennessee we are blessed, or cursed, with an abundant supply of limestone rocks. It is no trouble to find rocks of all sizes to shoot at.
I like to find rocks about the size of a basketball or larger and place them from about 40-80 yards and shoot at them with open sighted revolvers offhand.
If you find rocks at least 4" thick you can shoot them several dozen times with 357 mags and 44 specials before they finally break up. 44 magnums will usually destroy them after a few shots unless they are very thick.
A good thing about rocks is that a hit will result in a puff of white smoke and there is nothing to pick up as long as you are not shooting in a field where you mow, I usually like to get up in the woods.

Steel plates of various sizes for different distances. I especially like the instant feedback of the clang when you hit the target.

You can make your own bio-degradible targets with the clay they use to make ceramics. Make whatever size you need then just let them dry, don't fire them in a kiln. After you shoot them just let them lay because the next rain turns them into muddy water.
