Antelope with the 25-06 Ultra.

My young friend toke his Antelope with the the new Ultra that I worked on all summer. One shot did the trick. He said it was a long way out, whatever that means. He is very exited about his new rifle. He used my left over handloads. I guess I have to make him another box of new handloads with new brass.

I got my Antelope the week before with the 25Hunter that makes 15 one shot kills with that rifle. Too bad my Ruger#1 is not chambered for this case. With the 26" barrel I would easy get 3200ft/sec with a 100gr bullet.

We are going deer hunting on the 4th/11 for both Whitetails and Mulies. I am going to use my Ruger#1 25-06 for the first time on game. This rifle is deadly accurate with the 100gr Barnes-X triple shock bullets. There be venison for sure. Fred M

congrats it is always good to hear of hard work paying off.  And good luck with your deer hunt. I'll be busy with deer as well, along with my general whitetail I have buck and doe mule tag and a doe whitetail tag. I'll be of in 118 for the 4/19 .  

I was off scouting on the weekend I saw mostly does, but there were some younger bucks starting to chase them around so with any luck the bachelor groups will start breaking up soon.  This is only my third time hunting Mulie bucks  since I move here, but it seems to me that mule deer go into run 1-2weeks earlier than whitetails. What has your experience been.

Which way are you heading?

BTW the 243 ultra did manage to down an coyote the weekend before last the pelt damage was not too bad for a fringe hit at close range (running at 40 yards it was good and suckered)  we were just north west of Cochrane between my buddy and I we called in 5 and got 3

but it seems to me that mule deer go into run 1-2weeks earlier than whitetails. What has your experience been.

I only ever killed one Mule Deer buck and he was not fit to eat, strictly dog food. I only hunt for good meat, young dry does and small Whitetail bucks if I can help it. Same goes for Antelope if I can't get a draw for a female I won't go hunting.

If a doe Antelope is run for a few hours it too starts to smell. With a doe it is mostly the skin that smells bad. You have to ambush them when they are at ease and drop them on the spot.

I'm glad to see there are other people here that use the 25-06. I'm crazy about mine. Mine will shoot well under an inch at 100y. Last year on opening day of whitetail season here i got to try my 25-06 out with federal premium 100 gr. nosler b-tips. Man that deer didn't take another step. I to like to go for the smaller deer does prefferably. They just taste better unless your making jerky and deer sausage and then it doesn't matter. I've read some questions from some here that ask if you could choose only one rifle to fit your bill what would it be. I will proudly,and confidently choose my 25-06REM

Some thing about the 25 caliber, and it has been around for some time in the 250 Sav, the 257 Roberts and the 25-35, it kills better than with more authority then you would expect.

Anytime I talk to someone with a 25-06 it is the same story.

The 25-06 is a wicket caliber and so is that little 25 Hunter I love so much.
Both with accuracy that borders on bench rest quality.

That 100gr Triple shock is something else, I never used it on game, but if it works like Barnes claims it has to be a winner. Besides this bullet has a very high ballistic coefficient and with 3440 ft/sec it is incredible flat shooting. It has a 6" point blank range to nearly 400 yrds.

Coyotes watch out, I can touch you, eh?
