just bought one of these. anybody have any comments on the quality and accuracy of these rifles? any history or info on the "ultra" designation or the sb2 would be appreciated as this is my first nef rifle.thanks guys!!

I have a .25-06 Ultra, also! .25-06 NEFs are kinda hot and cold here, most shoot good, but not all of em. Mine likes Hornady 117gr BTSP and Federal 115gr Nosler Partitions best, shoots ~1" @100yds, first 2 almost touching and the 3rd a bit away from the other 2. The Rem 100gr CLSP also shoot pretty good. Polish the chamber and you'll probably not have any failures to eject, one of the common complaints. Clean it good, inside and out before you shoot it, there's a bunch of gunk in most of em from the factory, filings, grease and the bores are filthy. Make sure the chamber is completely dry help with the ejection, also.

Mine shoots right at 1 inch at 100y.

My goal is to get under an inch with a 3-shot group. With a little experimenting, I think I can do it. First step is going up to the range for a nice sturdy resting area compared to my personal 100y range with a portable bench.

My favorite loads are:

Federal 90grn Sierra Varminet HPBT

And a reload:

56.5grns of IMR 4350 behind a 75grn Hornady V-Max.

These both shoot exactly 1 inch at 100y. This was my conclusion after only 2 days of the range shooting about 5 groups out of the two loads total. So, I'd imagine I can blast a few more groups and get under an inch seeing how I didn't shoot the gun much yet.

Hildy, take your time, mine always shoots the first 2 round almost touching, but I'm not patient and shoot all 3 shots within a minute or 2. If the barrel is allowed to cool for several minutes between shots, I believe a real tight group can be done with a Handi. Good shootin!

I use mine for hunting only and it has been totally reliable. Have not had any of the sticking cases, etc. I don't reload, so I don't try for moa groups. Mine will shoot less than 2" with 100 gr. Core Loks and 120 gr Winchester PEP's. Good enough for me in the woods. Have fun.

If your getting a blown group from barrel heating, especially vertical stringing but any group which expands from barrel heating, take off the forearm and shoot from a bench while resting the gun on the action on a soft or padded rest. If the group expansion is less shooting this way try free floating the forearm with any of the tricks spoken of here, o-ring, business card, sanding, etc. It may help. As a matter of fact it will probably help to some degree, mild to wild....<><.... :grin:
