How did the Montec compare with field points for accuracy for you?
They are the best fixed blade I've found yet for grouping right with field points. The SlickTricks are good, but Montecs were better (for me). They seem to be a little less critical of fletching for good flight, and have performed well with feathers and vanes and 4 degree offset or 8 degree helical fletching. I did have to drop back to 4" fletching for the 8 degree fletching to get clearance, but it seems to work fine with both Montecs and SlickTricks. The only thing I've noticed with then is that they seem to shoot lower than field points as ranges increase. Probably loose velocity sooner than field points. The Montecs are an inch or two low at 40 yards, and the SlickTricks about twice that, but both are still centered on windage! I'm not going to bee shooting at deer at that range anyway, so it's really nothing to worry about unless a groundhog or coyote appears at 40 or 50 yards

wabi I have found they (Montec) are 1/2" longer then the slicktricks, I also lined up the Montec blades with my 4" feathers @ 4deg. The test head(Montec) at 20 and 30 were slightly lower then my field tips and could have been the shooter fault.

Also upon inspection I do not know what that dealer was trying to sell me to sharpen the Montec but a flat stone as you and the web site shows is all ya need. Will keep ya posted if I shoul get the chance to use one.

Do you have a test head from/for Montec ? I have two. They were passing them out at a show while back that a couple of my friends attened and they let me have them. Sure saves your good ones. :)

Gary,
No, I don't have a practice Montec
I just use 'em then re-sharpen them. I think they tend to hit lower because they loose velocity quicker than field points, but my Exocet groups them so close to field points at 20 yards it's hard to tell any differance.
I ordered a Buck Knives diamond stone & "stick" sharpening kit from Cabela's last night. Finally found what I was looking for in a diamond stone!
One that was on sale for $15 :-D  :-D  :-D

I was shooting SlickTricks at the doe because I'd never used one before. A good cut, quick kill & short recovery, but I'm not convinced they have any advantage over the Montec. I shot a doe with a Montec last year and got similar results.
Actually my favorite broadhead for deer is a Wasp JakHammer mechanical with a 1 3/4" cutting diameter, but the 300 fps speeds are enough to sometimes open them in flight, and they can't be used through the shoot-through windows if I'm using my ground blind, so the hunt for a good fixed blade was on. The Montec is still #1 on my list with the SlickTrick second and the others I've tried aren't even in the running

I use the 100 grain Montec.
The new diamond stone arrived and it works great on the Montecs. I did the side to side sharpening they show on the website to get them flat & clean of burrs or nicks, then a couple strokes tip first and they are sharp!

I was thinking about changing to Slick Tricks next season.  Are the Montecs that much better? Not real good with a stone.  I used  Black Diamonds and Bear Razorheads back in the old days.  I had a hard time keeping them sharp.  I doubt I've improved with age.  What ya think.

tkstae go to Montec web site and you can see the instructions on how too sharpen them...It is easy as they just lay flat on the stone.

I have not yet shot a Montec but it is ready if I get the chance. I am a SLICKTRICK user and sure like they way they work for me, but thought I would try the Montec..always looking ya know!! :)
