an i fell in love. it was at a fun shoot organized on another gun forum. it was a real Colt with hogue grips and stock sites. i was usingsome winchester hardball i got at a gunshow earlier in the day. didn't hit a thing but had some serious fun!! only bad moment was when a hot casing went down my collar and caused me to jump. gun was pointed down finger off the trigger, but with short barrels you havbe be even more aware of muzzle direction. pics to follow soon. :D

Strange how this happens. I got into the 1911 more as an arranged marriage because that's what was needed for the 45 match in bullseye competition. It really grew on me though.

i've wanted one for awhile but wasn't sure if i'd still want one after i tried it. how wrong i was. i didn't like the look of them, but those wrap around rubber grips where pretty comfy.thought a .45 would have more recoil, but i guess like semi auto rifles, the action eats the recoil. another thing i noticed was the slide release and mag release where on the left side. being left handed i could operate them with just my trigger finger.

Bought the Springfield Armory GI about a month ago. My first 1911 type. Went back last weekend and bout the Ultra Compact. It's habit forming.

At least up here we got norinco .45’s for $325 so I won’t have to break the bank. Funny thing about norinco pistols, the 1911 is really good the hi-power is garbage and everything else is so-so. Those SA GI models are also on my wish list, but they run around $750 up here so it’ll be a chi-com .45 for starters.

I remember my first time.  The paper was only 25 ft away and after 21 rounds I'd only had one marginal hit on the edge of the paper. :eek: :oops:

Once I over came my pushing forward in anticipation of recoil I started getting good groups.

Now I got two Colts.  A 1911A1 my bride gave me for Chrismas in 1997 and a 1991A1 Compact Model that I aquired in trade this year.  I also have a line on a WWII Ithica from an estate sale. :roll:

Welcome to the obsession.  :mrgreen:

Good point, Stoney Pete.  I thought it took a remarkable amount of practice to get reasonably good with it. Evidently shootability wasn't a criterion for the military when they picked it.  This gave us generations of inept pistol marksmen in our military.

Just got a SpringField 1911 A1 last week, first 1911 type I have fired in years. It is a lot better than the wore out GI .45 ACP guns the Army use to have!

kevin303;
Sounds like your interest has been turned to another direction "congrats"  for handgunning can be fun too and there is no better gun than the 1911!!!!
I'm not sure how it is where you live but there are many great hardley shot used handguns here for sale and some are half the price of the new ones and there just as good too.  If you go looking for a used 45acp just look at the barrel for wear when its open and the barrel movement when its closed on the end.  Also a 45acp will have that rattle when you shake it too its just a trate of the gun.  Plus there is some good cheap ammo out there right now too for the 45acp too.
I own and shoot a wide variety of handguns from short barreled 357mg to 9mm auto's, to 45acp's to the longer barrel 44mgs. And here's the biggest tip i can pass on to anyone who shoots different guns all the time for we have a hard time mastering them all in accuracy. While i use the sights on the longer barreled heavier handguns I have found and easy way to shoot the shorter handguns with ease and much more accurate and quicker aim on targets too.  While shooting 25yds I just cover what i want to hit with the barrel, i just site down the barrel of a 45acp and just cover the target.  This even works with snubies too.  With my SA 45acp at 25yds i picked up an empty freon canister and with an out of the holster quick aim i put all 8 shots in it while it even moved rapid fire without using the sights just by looking down the barrel.  You can get pretty good at this stlye of shooting too.  I feel sometime these may just not be time to look down the sights to aim and looking down the barrel is much quicker.  I've taught some of my buddies who were in vietnam and they couldn't hit the side of a barn with a 45acp. and within 5 minutes they were marksman at it.                                                                            BigBill
