Long Range mule Deer Cartridge
« on: November 02, 2004, 05:08:47 PM »
I would like opinions for long range open country mule deer cartridges. I have decided to go with a standard encore pistol barrel of 16". I am considering .308 or 7-08. I am an experienced longe range pistol shooter and would always use shooting stix. All opinions welcomed.

I'm not answering this from experience in either cartridge, just what I've read, so please don't criticize me for this.  I'm just trying to help.
I live in New Mexico where the Muley shots are around 200 yd's or so.  If I had to pick one (and I'm a reloader.....) I'd chose the 7-08.  I belive you have a good variety of bullet weights for the distance and can tailor a load to fit this type of hunt.  I think I read somewhere that the ballistics of the 7-08 and the .308 are almost identical.
Just my 2cts

I wouldn't hesitate to take a 200 yard shot with my 708. Like you many of our shots are over 100 yards and I think either one would do the job.  The 308 may have an edge with higher vel with a heavier bullet. My hunting load is a 140 g BT at 2570 and I've had 150 Partitions up around 2540 out of a 15" bbl just to give you an idea. Maybe someone with a 308 will chime in with some real world vel to compare to.
