Scope choice for Air Rifle Silhouette?
« on: November 15, 2004, 08:36:41 AM »
Could anyone advise me on the best scope to use for Air Rifle silo? I am getting a Steyr LG100. I am currently considering the Leupoldt 6.5-20X44 with the target dot or the Nikko Stirling 6-24X42.

Thaks in advance for your kind advice.

The Leupold 6.5-20X is fine...but for airgun you need the EFR version. You might find that sending it to Premier and having a 5/8 dot installed is a good idea. (Or you can just order it from Premier in the first place...)

You should at least consider the Bushnell Elite 4200 (formerly B & L).  Optically and mechanically it is at least as good as a Leupold; plus, the air rifle distances are indicated on the adjustable objective, so there is NO GUESSING when you're focussing for your next animal.  It comes from the factory with a target dot (1/4 minute, I believe).  Adjustable from 6 to 24x.  The only downside (besides the 1/8 minute adjustment, which you may or may not find annoying) is the weight (about 21 ounces).  But on an air rifle, weight is usually not an issue.

And, they cost half of what a Leupold does (under $400 if you shop around).

I'd agree with your reasoning re the 4200 except for one thing...

Neither of us thought to ask: Which version of the Steyr is he planning on getting? (IIRC, the 'LG100' designation is the same for the match rifle, the field target and the high-power variants.)

The Bushnell is great on the FT gun where the chicken to ram correction is about 2 moa; but IMO that 11 moa correction from chickens to rams is a KILLER on a target gun when you use a scope that needs nearly 2 full revolutions on the dial and has only 26 moa total adjustment range to start with. (Just about everyone using one seems to sooner or later wind up a revolution off during a match...)

Ernie, you're right about the "off by one revolution" problem; that's the drawback of 1/8 minute clicks.  Some folks swear it's not an issue (I've even been chastised here for suggesting it is), but I'm inclined to agree with you.  I have my 4200 mounted on a CA2002 (10-meter rifle), and it does take more than one revolution from chickens to rams.  The one saving grace is that there are lines on the adjustment post to indicate how many revolutions up you are.  You have to pay close attention, though.

That said, I'm guessing (from the FT designation -- Field Target) that the air rifle in question is the high velocity version (900 fps versus 600 fps on a 10-meter "target" rifle).  If so, keeping track of elevation should be less of a problem.

Mr. Pigs...

If I may so presume...  Within the confines of one revolution, I find the difference between 1/4 minute and 1/8 minute to be of little significance whatsoever.   Nothing more than a nit in the behind of Her Royal Majesty.  Much as that nasty little ditty in the Falkland Islands were.  However, I must whole heartedly agree that whence we pass into the ether world of the "second revolution" the opportunities for disastrous result are foreboding indeed.  You Sir have born your ridicule well and are to be commended for your bravery and service to the Crown.

Well said, Dave, and thanks (I think).

Is the Aguila ammo you mentioned sub-sonic?  If so, I suspect you may have found yourself in the ether world of the "second revolution."

It is sub-sonic but i'm using a T-10 with 1/4 minute clicks that goes on and on.  I am well within the bounds of the first revolution.  If I were using my Sightron I'd be past and into hell's creation of the second revolution.
