Long-range Soule sight; able to use close range?
« on: October 10, 2004, 07:14:43 PM »
Have a Pedersoli .45-120 Quigley with 34" barrel. Planning to buy a long-range Montana Vintage Arms Soule vernier to use with a Smith Enterprises spirit level globe front.

Question: How short a range would I be able to shoot with this combination? 100 yards? Less?

The reason I ask is that I want to shoot as far as 1000 yards, and it would be nice if the long-range sight would do both near and far.

You may have to remove your rear sight if it is a full buckhorn. I've been able to use a soule sight with a semi buckhorn at 100 yds but I think the full horns of a full buckhorn would have gotten in the way.

My long range soule is set at 9 minutes vertical elivation for my .45-70 at 100 yards.  I have shot the 1000 yard range at Raton with this sight and gun, so to answer your question, "Yes, you can shoot both long range and 100 yards.  You will most probably have to remove the rear sight as mentioned by another shooter in a previous responce.

You might want to consider a Baldwin Soule long range sight before you make your final decision.  His sights are first rate and he's a great guy to deal with. I wouldn't use anything else if I had a choice.

Unless you really plan to shoot at 1000 yards you just might want to buy the mid range sight instead. I have the Pedersoli Billy Dixon model. It is essentially the same gun. The long range sight is a PITA. It doesn't fold flat against the butt without marking the stock along its comb. Also,  it gets in the way of swabbing the bore because it simply won't fold flat enough against the stock.   As to your original question, yes, you can shott and adjust for 100 yards to even about 50 yards.

My MVA long-range vernier showed up Thursday and I shot it on Saturday. You folks were right, no problem zeroing at 100 yds. I can't recall just now how many minutes it was at for 100. I can say though, that when it was set at zero (my starting point) it shot about 8"-9" low at 25 yards! Yes, it was also necessary to remove the barrel-mounted rear sight.

Now that I have my sights working, I can get back to my load development. At 100yds had 3 flyers that were 6" out, the remaining 6 shots went into 3". The two factors I'm going to work on first are: 1) Verify my OAL and see if I have room to seat my bullet further out. 2) Get far more scientific on how I provide my grease cookie. To get started, I have just been rolling it in a ball about the size of a large pea and putting in on top of a waxed paper disc.

Rum River: recently there was a thread on the .45-3.25" on the Shiloh board. According to the author, he claimed superb results w/ the load & was getting approx 1299 FPS w/ Fg Goex & 575 grn bullet.

Now if the rifle can consistently repeat it, he'll be on to something....
