My savage bolt (bought used) I just noticed has some side to side play in the bolt (very slight, but there) when the rifle is NOT cocked. When the rifle IS cocked, the play is gone.

The rifle shoots fairly well with 3 shot groups at about 1"

Any ideas if this is normal and if not what it takes to fix?

I wouldn't worry excessively.. There has to be some play in the bolt to receiver fit to allow proper function. It's not there when the rifle's cocked because the striker is then under spring tension and held to the rear by the sear.
