I have a 30.06 load that is not even close to what max is and I get cratered primers (ex. 53.5gr of H380 w/165gr Noslers- max is listed at 56gr.) I have some that are close to max and they slightly crater too. I am using CCI primers. Are CCI's softer on the material the primer is made of. CCI's are all I have used in the past and I am just wondering.

I backed off the 30.06 load by .5gr and they went away. On the other load lower also. I know it could be a million variables, but what are some of the most common ones? Bullet style, barrel chamber?

Are you using military cases w/ heavy walls and diminished volume? Do you know how to check the volume of these cases? If you aren't using the prescribed cases per your reloading guide, try using their recommendations and try again.

No military, I am using Remington brass. Started out with brand new brass. A lot of the reloading manuals don't state a type of brass used. I was wondering because I have seen this with the Contender and Encore. Not the same load with each, just the same primers. It doesn't bother me to back off a little, because I am getting decent velocity out of the rounds. Mainly it is with the 30.06 Encore. I was just curious as to the composition of the CCI primers. trim your cases and see if that helps.. my sone shoots reloaded 30--6 and i got poor case life with remington.(split necks.. . im switching to winchester. listen toyour gun.. you will be safer and be a much better reloader ending up with great accurate loads.. the gun is much more important to heed than loading data.. you can sometime rent chrono graphs and see what your velodity is.. hard bullets like partition nosler can raise pressures. i use 150 nosler in my sones gun and the partition i believe raises pressures, dont now for sure.. you can work up a slowere burneing powder and see if that helps. slower powder would use more grains in the book for the same velocity.. definitly try imr 4350 if its in your books.. dave.
