PMC .45-70 Ammo Shoots Great!

Finally got to the range today for a while, shot the PMC Silver 350gr ammo, was pleasantly rewarded with 1" 3 shot groups @ 100yds, sighted in 3" high, then went to 200yds and shot a 2.5" 3 shot group that printed 5" low with a 10mph wind, perfectly acceptable for an elk/deer round if I ever choose to use it. Next trip I'll work on some handloads using the 300gr nosler partition and H4198. This .45-70 is a bunch of fun!!! :grin:

i heard it was good ammo. maybe i'll try some when i get a 45-70. real low on cash right now as i just bout/traded for another rossi sinlge shot .44 and a air rifle

  I think you will like those nosler partition 300gr..We use those as well as the IMR 4198 powder in winchester brass and CCI 200 primers..Dads Handi is getiing sub 1 inch groups with varying outdoor temps. and humidity...We have his loaded at 45.2grains and COL of 2.510 with factory crimp quite heavy..I think I'm going to try and work up to 51.2gr..See what kind of groups I can get at those velocities..

I'm hoping to be using 50-59 grns H4198 for velocities in the 2200-2400fps range. Max load for the Marlin lever guns is 60grs with the 300gr Sierra, hoping to find a load that shoots well using the 300gr Nosler. The spec for the PMC 350gr ammo is 2025fps, I believe that is a conservative figure going by their long range drop chart. I had less drop than they showed so their velocity must be achieved with a shorter barrel or it is way conservative.

Which cases and primers are you going to use..???? You need to be carefull when substituting components...and you will find that by switching to the Nosler...your velocities will go way over what the book is calling for...long before you get to a max loading...the Nosler has a bit longer bearing surface on it than the Sierra's have,and thus your pressure will be considerably higher...and you'll need a real firm crimp to get complete powder burn...without a good crimp...you find your velocity figures inconsistant...and it will vary a-lot...it took me a while to figure that one out...with this combination......

Mac, I invested in the nosler bullets, nickel brass and the 9-1/2 primers, looks like I'll be buying a chrono, also...I'll start with a 35gr load and work up. If that doesn't work out I'll probably use the 300gr sierra bullet and be happy. Sure would like to make the Nosler work, though.  :wink:  thx

I've also been wondering about the PMC's. Saw some at the Tulsa Gun Show awhile back but picked up some 17M2's instead. How was the recoil compaired to the remmy 300??   More than brisk I bet.... :roll:

Yup, you can tell the difference, but it's still real shootable from the bench. With the extra weight of the lam stock and lead, it's about the same as my .308 BLR. All shooting was done at the bench, cept for an offhand simulated grouse head shot at 25yds, dead grouse! :grin:

50 grains of H4198 is a good starting point with those cases and primers...do you have a Lee Factory crimp die for it yet???if not...pick one up...it will make a world of difference in your velocity deviation(shot-to-shot) and you'll see the velocities your wanting come up pretty fast at that starting load...Hodgdons Annual list a starting load at 55 grains...using Sierras 300 grain bullet ...Winchester cases and cci 200 primers...sooo reducing it almost 10 percent is a good way to go...and will get you at  your velocity goal easier than loading below trapdoor levels....once you find the sweet spot for your load,the accuracy is pretty amazing...and when you get to take a deer with them...you'll really be impressed with the bullets performance...

Mac, I have the factory crimp die, but I don't think it will work with the Lee Loader, expect I'll be ordering an Anniversary kit too or at least a classic press. Any comments on the AR2207 to H4198 statement in the above link. I haven't researched it yet to find out if it is a fact or not, just curious.  thx
