New NEF Junkie
« on: November 09, 2004, 05:53:39 AM »
I've had a Handi rifle in 45-70 for about a year and a half now but have,nt shot it much.  I've lurked around here for a few months soaking up advice.  Two weeks ago i officially became hooked.  A local gun store had a used SB2 with survivor stock and stainless barrel and receiver chambered for 357 mag for $145.  Needless to say I can resist anything except temptation.  My 15 year old son and I have had this out to the range for the past 2 weekends, and there are now 2 new NEF junkies in the world.  I may have to find another so that I have one to shoot.  It's a good thing that I cast bullets, cause all I have to buy is powder and primers.  This makes it almost as cheap to shoot as a 22.  Now I just have to save my pennies so that I can get barrels in 44 mag, 30-30 and 22 hornet.  I have molds to cast for all these as well.  The wife sure insn't going to be happy about this.  Best wishes to all.  Dale :-D

Welcome aboard Dale.  Bunch of hopeless addicts here.....haven't found any 12 step programs that seem to cure us of our need for more and more calibers, sights, stocks. Sigh.  Only time I say the Serenity Prayer is when I big 8-point come sneakin' along, and I need to calm down some.

:D Welcome to the board, Dale! I'm new to the Handi Rifles, too, and these fellas will help you out for sure, and maybe we'll even learn a thing or 2 from you.

The wife should be grateful you're not hooked on Weatherby's  :)

That's the great thing about these little rifles. You can just buy barrels for them instead of the whole gun.

I own a .17 HMR and a now .243 (was .44 mag). They're a blast to shoot. Welcome to the club.  :D
Ohhhh, I hate when that happens

Dale, welcome to our little part of the internet. Lots of knowledgeable folks here to answer your Handi-Questions. But alas, no one to cure your Handi-itis.

Here is a pic of my newly acquired stainless Handi in .357 Mag.

Again, welcome to Graybeards.

Dale, lotta us here shooting .357s both Mags and Maxed. Several of us casting for them. I will warn you that when you go for more than plinking velocities, you have to go to GC bullets.

Welcome aboard and please share what moulds you have. You might also check in at the Cast Bullet forum.

Thank you all for the warm welcome.

Nixter;  My rifle looks like yours, but I have the pistol grip style survivor buttstock.

Leftoverdj;  I've always figured that plain base bullets were good up to about 1600 fps and gas checks from there up to about 2200.  Does this agree with your information??
Bullet molds I'm, currently using are as follows.
Lee;     30 cal 160 and 180 grain round nose
           358 148gr wadcutter
                 140 grain semi wadcutter
429 240 grain semi wad cutter
240 grain semi wad cutter hollow point
           457 405 grain flat point
405 grain flat point hollow point
RCBS  44-245-SWC
Ideal   358 439     158 grain swc hollow point
Lyman 252435      22 cal 50 grain round nose
          358315      204 grain round nose

I also have several round ball molds that I use mostly for sling shot ammo and several molds for jigs and split shot.  I think that about covers it.
Again thanks all for the welcome.  Dale  :D
