Holster for 4" S&W 629
« on: October 01, 2004, 07:55:11 PM »
I was wearing my 629 today while out walking along a river when I started thinking how fast could I really get it out of my shoulder rig.   I wasn't too impressed.  I always used a paddle side holster for my other carry rigs and could draw them much faster than the shoulder rig.  I was wondering what you guys use for woods carry, does anyone know of a nice paddle style holster for the 4" 629.  Thanks

I pack my mtn. gun in a high ride with quick release. I made it a few years ago and have given the pattern to friends. I can scan a pic if you send your email address. You can send as PM if you don't want to post here. Or if someone wants to post a pic I can send it to them.

I have an older Bianchi open top holster I have used for different 4" N frame revolvers before and still use it.  It holds the gun, but loosely and I can produce it quickly enough even with the snap top strap fastened to hold it down.  I have found the 'used holster' table at one of my local gunshops to be a treasure trove for holsters and the like.  HTH.  Mikey.

Got it, thanks.  That is a nice looking holster. Did you have a pattern that you went from or did you just wing it?  I have been thinking about getting a galco shoulder holster for it.

I used a holster to get the outer dementions and expermented a little to get it to work. The back piece of leather is flat while the front is large enough to be molded to most pistols. That way it doesn't tighten up when contoured to body.  The snap retainer piece was an idea from a friend years ago for a quick release.

I was just looking at a chest holster from Survival sheath systems.  It looks very promising.  Any of you guys have any experience with this rig?

I like the Bianchi 5BHL, strong side hip holster w/a thumb snap, for most of my "bear gun packing" time.

But in the colder times or wet weather when I have bigger / longer coats on, I really prefer to wear cross-draw, and leave the bottom 1/4 part of my outer garments unbutton / zipped.  The gun stays protected from the weather, but just slip my hand under the flap of material and out the gun comes.  I found this worked much better for me then trying to get to my shoulder holster, especially when I was zipped up and trying to keep warm.

Good luck w/ your choice and just practice w/ what ever you get!

For the sake of repetition, I try to always carry the same way, all the time. Hopefully, instinct will take over if need be, in time of eminent danger. I've always had this idea that changing carry practices will put me grabbing in the wrong spot and coming up empty handed.

I just got my chest holster from Survival Sheath Systems.   I am very impressed with it.  It holds the pistol very well.  You can hardly even feel it once it has been on for a while.  It is by far the most confortable way to carry a heavy loaded 44 for a long period of time.  It is also equally comfortable while sitting, standing or even wearing a pack frame.  I was even able to draw my bow and shoot from several posistions without the gun interefering, that one one of my only fears.  I think this is possibly  the best feild carry system I have ever came across.
