upgrades for 1895GS?

I am interested in getting an 1895 GS.  What modifications do you feel enhance the performance of the 1895 that either Wild West Guns or Brockmans offer?  For instance, Brockmans offers glass bedding of the stock and forearm. Do you feel this is necessary?  Does it enhance performance?  Some things are subjective. I understand that, such as "dehorning sharp edges".  These do not enhance performance but are personal preference.   ( I would happen to like the smooth feel.)  What about synthetic stocks?  Has there been cases where the wood stock has "failed" or warped?  So, what mod's do you think are beneficial and why?

Both places offer a-lot of different things you can spend your money on...and both have exceptional products...although I haven't sent my 1895 GS to them to be reworked...if I did I would have a Happy Trigger added by Wild West and the sharp edges smoothed down on the lever...or have a glove lever added that already was smoothed down...I have had my Marlin out in some really nasty down pours and haven't had any warpage at all...that's not to say it wouldn't happen if going up North to Alaska where tempreatures can be extream...but for my usage it hasn't yet...I bought and installed a Limbsaver recoil pad #10102 and it matched perfectly to the stock...no overhang what-so-ever...first time getting a pre-fit...that actually fit...and I don't know if they could make it shoot any better than it already does...the one thing I would like to have would be a take-down version of this rifle...with a  matching stainless 26" octagon barrel....that would be my dream set-up for it...so if your just wanting  cosmetic changes...or functionality changes...determine what you want...and the amount you want to spend...and then call them and discuss your plans...and to answer your question..."are they worth it"...you really have to ask yourself  will it be worth it to me...because it's your rifle they will be customizing or building...and it has to make you happy or why bother doing it.....

After getting a 1895 GS and trying out, you may find that it only needs a good trigger and recoil pad.  The trigger will enhance the gun's performance and the pad will enhance your ability.

TennesseeNuc: Good advice.
 
Fortress: First you need to own an 1895 for awhile and put some rounds downrange. Then you can decide on modifications. If you reload and plan to start with stout loads, then I would suggest that you (a) get a good recoil pad or (b) buy that $10 Winchester shoulder pad that is always on sale at Midwayusa.com (I have the magnum version and it works great).
 
I've owned the GS for 2 years now and I've done fairly minimal fiddling (listed in order of priority):

  • Williams WRGS peep with a Firesight front bead
  • Lightened and polished the trigger myself (pretty simple)
  • Recoil pad

    The 1895GS is a pretty handy packing rifle as is, so it is difficult to understand the mods to make it even more handy. I like the idea of a winged peep and front blade, but I don't like it enough to spend $120 for it :)
     
    I wouldn't spend a nickle on glass bedding or dehoning. Why? First of all you can't "glass bed" a levergun stock - there's nothing to bed :) Secondly, since it is a Stainless rifle there's no finish to worry about so you can "dehorn" anything you want, whenever you want (all you need is sandpaper and a scotchbrite/steelwool).

The only things I did to my Stainless GG was to put a set of XS ghost ring sights and a scout mount with a 2.5x IER Leupold scope with heavy post reticle.  I also put in a WWG bear proof ejector.  I'm not sure how much of a difference the WWG ejector makes but being a one peice compared to the factory two peice part it should be more durable.  I also really like the aluminum magazine follower compared to the factory plastic one.  maybe down the road I will go for one of thier oversized loop levers.

I put the DRC large loop lever on mt 1895ss. It's quality is top notch and it's easy install. Very happy. 125.00 from Brownel's. Three day delivery.
Also, I put on the Brockman's Gen. III front tritium sight and Gen. III rear winged sight. They are top notch too.
