Does something like this interest you?
« on: November 10, 2004, 05:59:48 AM »
I am writing this, looking to see if there is enough interest for our idea to become a reality.
Would you be interested in a 3-day seminar that is suited to the specialty handgun hunter/varminter.  This would be a field shoot using field rests from field positions shooting at unknown distances on steel targets.  300+ rounds would be needed for the amount of shooting you would be doing ( you could bring more than one specialty handgun).  Location would likely be just SE of Pueblo, Colorado.  There would also be some bench shooting to work on basic form and to get zero's set correctly.  We would limit participants to 10 (Maybe allow 12) so as to maximize the amount of shooting everyone gets.  Lodging and food would be your responsibility.  Sometime in the month of May is when this would happen.  Distances would begin at 150 yards an go out to 500 yards (Yes, we will be stretching some of the limits with a few longer targets to make it challenging and fun).
Again, what I'm writing about is not a reality yet.  Whether or not it does become that will depend upon what specialty handgun shooters and hunters think about it.  Let me know what you think and if you have any questions feel free to ask you.  I may or may not have an answer for you since Steve & I really began to put this together yesterday out on a ranch SE of Pueblo.

Jerry,
Just found out that we have solid permission from the rancher. He even wants to come and watch. Marc Sheehan, Steve Hugel and myself will be instructors/Range Officers. There will also be shooting out to 1k if so desired from either the bench or prone position on steel targets. We are coming up with a list that what to bring. One thing I would highly suggest is that if you intend to shoot much beyond 500 yards (not required, but it sure fun) is that you get set-up with the posi-align rings where you can easily build minutes into your rings. A scope with a Ballistic Plex reticle or something like it would be great. Scope with target turrets would also work well. We will be showing you how to use your scope for wind doping and identifying whether or not your animal is beyond your maximum point blank range. It is also a place where you can test every kind of field rest you have. My favorites or the Harris Bi-pod, Back Pack, Shooting Sticks, and in between my knees. everyone will need their back packs for the field courses since you will be carrying your ammo optics, etc. One of the newer stadium seats that you can adjust the straps on it are great for back support for sitting shots. At some stages we may limit you to one stance just as happens in the field sometimes. We are even going to throw in some fun surprises. Everyone will shoot in the field courses as two person teams. Don't have time to explain everything now. Hope this does wet your appetite more though.

Here is some more info from my hunting buddy Steve:

The $200 is gonna be used to cover expenses, and the rest will go to the rancher for the use of his "facility". We are gonna have to get a # of portable steel silhouettes, etc. together which is gonna cost some money. I may be able to gather some rams/pigs/chickens for our use from the local range as well.

The ranch is located as Ernie mentioned about 20 miles SE of Pueblo, and is a beautiful isolated place to shoot. One of my favorite coyote haunts, for sure.

This is not gonna be like the Bower shoot. I would go to his shoot again at the drop of a hat, as i really like and respect Don for all he's done for the sport, etc., and it is excellent for teaching shooting technique, and LR shooting from the bench. This shoot is designed to incorporate all those fundamentals with additional tactical-type techniques to develop a system for maximizing 1st shot connections in the field to the longest of ranges, i.e. tactical reticle/target turret applications with variable as well as fixed power scopes, some anemometer use, ballistic programs, MOA, IPHY, mil-dot, ballistic reticle usage, laser rangefinders, LR scope mounting systems, etc.

The field courses will involve engaging various known size targets (mostly rectangular steel silhouettes) at unknown ranges (to be ranged if needed, either optically with the reticle or via laser), from various positions, and is gonna be FUN, and educational for all of us, for sure. There will also be benches set up for zeroing, etc.

Steve

PS
For those interested, you need to send me an e-mail ernie33@sbcglobal.net  or check some of the other handgun forums as I am not going to post anymore here.   What started as a hopeful possibility has quickly turned into a reality-things went faster than we imagined.  Soon (month or so) we will be able to give specific information which will go beyond "are you interested" into outright advertising for this seminar.  I have not paid for advertising here, so this is the last post about this get together.
