has any one tried swiss 1.5 grain powder in a flintlock. i have 2 lbs. i bought for bp cartridge and am considering trying it in my .50 cal. gpr. flintlock.

I tried Swiss 1 1/2 fg behind 500 gr bullets in my 45 cal muzzleloader. I burns a bit too slow, strings groups up and down, and does not give the accuracy that Goex 2fg does. Save it for your BP cartridge guns.

I haven't used it in a flintlock but I have in several percussion guns and it has worked fine. The 1.5 fg appears to be the same granulation as Goex Ffg and for me, in my rifles, shoots virtually the same. The Ffg Swiss is definately a finer granulation than Goex FFG and shoots hot, compared to it

I've heard rumors that it forms less fouling than other black powder. I
may try some in the new Hawken just to see what happens.

It is a Sporting powder & I will caution using it in the same measurements of what you would normally use. Most shooters reduce the load by 20% when shooting it as it is a hot powder & builds pressure quicker than most powders. Aprox 80 grains of Swiss is equiv. to aprox. 100 grains of Goex, etc.

Yes, it is Consideralby cleaner burning than Goex, Scheutzen & Elephant.
Accuracy wise I find it as accurate as anything I have shot & in the small bores it is Extremely accurate. IMHO, where people error with it & other powders is they think it will shoot their old load as well or whatever. Just like any powder, ball, patch, lube, you change, when ya change one of them you generally start over & find the new load for that particular combo & especially when ya change powders.

And in a small bore, 3F Swiss is the cats meow... It is awesome, potent, accurate, clean burning, etc..... And a pound of it in a .36 or .40 cal lasts a Long time at 25-30 grains a shot...

As for shooting it in flintlocks, that is almost all I shoot & it works wonderfully in all of them.

1.5 is ment for large bores. .54 or better, as a "main" charge you should have no problem,
Follow BD6 advise and you'l have litte trouble.

I've used the 1.5 fg Swiss in .50. .54 & .58cal rifles. It worked well in all and again, it didn't seem to be much hotter than Ffg Goex. The Ff g Swiss I have is defintely hotter than the Goex Ffg.

Yes, Swiss is cleaner burning but the last batch of Goex Ffg that I got seems to burn cleaner than my previous Goex, too. Or perhaps it isn't fouling as badly since I changed to moose milk and Lehigh Valley lubes.

Evening Gentlemen. I shoot a lot of Swiss in 1.5 to 3f. I use it in both flintlocks and caplocks and have had great sucess with it in hunting and target also. I also like it for my BPCR. I dont believe that you will have any trouble with it and it will also burn a little cleaner than any of the other powders out there..........stay safe..King

O. K. King, Ya got me. I've heard of all sorts of Black powder rifles made by Hawkin, Pedersoli, Thompson Center, Traditions, CVA, H & A, Navy Arms, Dixie, and sech...................................But I never heard of a rifle made by BPCR. Is it a 50 or a 54? It ain't one of those new fangled ones - is it?

Hey Crow Feather--BPCR= Black Powder Caribou Rifle. Every body ought to have one. Or two... On a more serious note, I'm thinking about a trip to the Maine Powder House in the near future, and I might try some Swiss in the new Hawken. It's a .54, about 1 and 1/8" at the breech. Any thoughts on how heavy a load to use? Which granulation?

Sounds like your 54 can handle more than my 54. I use 3f and about 50 grains of Goex for target work. I use 90 grains 3f for hunting. (100 yds)
If I had yours, I would just work my way up until accuracy goes all to poop and then back down some.

Does sound like a nice rifle though.

:-D I should have known I would have gotten gooned by someone( crow-feather) when I brought up the BPCR. Jeeze....I burn up so much powder I get kinda confused once inna while. Those BPCR ya be asking about starts out with the little .45-70 and goes up to the .50-140-700. That one burns a lot of powder also. Nice to know I can always get a grin when I come on here to see if everyone is having fun. Monday will be working up a load for a new .58 rb gun with a 44 inch bbl,1-72 twist. Should be interesting to see what occurs. Also attempting..and I mean attempting to see what I can do with my .75 Brown Bess..........love that gun.just cant seem to hit much with it...........must be the guy puling the trigger.............stay safe...........................King

With that 75 cal - what ever your shootin at - just show em the bullet. When they pass out from fright - go over an club em inna head with the rifle butt.

In the past, I've had good luck with a .530 ball over 100-110 grains of ffg, but each rifle is different. Don't know who built this one, but he was a craftsman of some talent. I'm guessing it to be 25 or 30 years old. When I
showed it to Leonard Day, he said it was one of the handsomest Hawkens he'd seen. I have to agree. There's not a mark on it to indicate who built it
just the lock maker's name, Schillinger, inside the lock. It fits me like it was made for me. I can close my eyes and throw it up to my shoulder and the sights are aligned every time! I do believe I will take it into the woods with me come primitive deer season this December.

Shot the Hawken today. It likes 110 grains of Goex ffg under a .53 ball and a .015 spit patch. Whoever zeroed it before me must shoot like I do 'cuz it is dead on at 100 yards (the only distance available to me).
Just for fun, I also took my 1842 musket along. That was a real eye opener. At the same distance it was putting every ball into an area the size of a deer's kill zone. Impressed the heck outa me. It shoots better than I can, that's for sure.

I use 1.5 Swiss in the .58 jeager flinter that birddog6 built for me.
It's good powder, and quite clean burning.
I've used up to 100 grains, but 85 works better, burns cleaner and has enough gee-whiz for deer and it's a bit more accurate than 100 grains.
The reason some are seeing an improvment in Goex recently is because the domestic supplier of Goex's KNO3 went belly up.
The new KNO3 comes from South America and it's better than the domestic crap was.
